Samsung GT-P5210 reaches the FCC, hints at a 10-inch Galaxy Tab 3

Samsung GTP5210 reaches the FCC, may be a 10inch Galaxy Tab 3

We know that Samsung's tablet line is growing quickly when the Galaxy Note 8.0 is shipping, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 exists and an 8-inch Tab 3 may come soon. The company must want to drive the point home, however: it just passed another slate, the GT-P5210, through the FCC's approval process. The filing carries few details, but it's enough to confirm a 10-inch screen, a WiFi-only variant and a model name in line with the Galaxy Tab 3 family (the 7-inch unit is the P3210). There aren't any telltale signs of a rumored Atom processor, though. We're mostly wondering when the P5210 will launch in earnest. Logic suggests that Samsung's June 20th event is a good candidate, but the tech giant doesn't always wait for big occasions to release big devices.

Boston bombing suspect is walking, mother says

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The remaining suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has recovered enough to walk and assured his parents in a phone conversation that he and his slain brother were innocent, their mother told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the father of a Chechen immigrant killed in Florida while being interrogated by the FBI about his ties to the slain brother maintained that the U.S. agents killed his son "execution-style."

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, walked without a wheelchair to speak to his mother last week for the first and only phone conversation they have had since he has been in custody, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva told the AP.

In a rare glimpse at Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's state of mind, he told her he was getting better and that he had a very good doctor, but was struggling to understand what happened, she said.

"He didn't hold back his emotions either, as if he were screaming to the whole world: What is this? What's happening?," she said.

The April 15 bombings killed three people and wounded more than 260. Elder brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed in a shootout with police, and Dzhokhar remains in a prison hospital after being badly wounded.

"I could just feel that he was being driven crazy by the unfairness that happened to us, that they killed our innocent Tamerlan," their mother said, standing by the family's insistence that their children are innocent.

The Tsarnaevs met the AP in their new apartment in a 14-story building in a well-to-do area of Makhachkala, the capital of the restive Caucasus province of Dagestan. The apartment had no furniture apart from a TV, a few rugs, and wallpaper materials lying on the floor.

Anzor Tsarnaev, the suspects' father, said they bought it for Tamerlan, his wife, and their young daughter in the expectation that they would move to Makhachkala later this year. He added that they planned to turn their old home in a dingy district on the outskirts of town into a dentist's office, so that Dzhokhar, a dental hygiene student, could work out of it after completing his studies.

"All I can do is pray to God and hope that one day fairness will win out, our children will be cleared, and we will at least get Dzhokhar back, crippled, but at least alive," Tsarnaev said.

Separately, at a news conference in Moscow, the father of a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter who was killed during FBI questioning accused agents of being "bandits" who executed his son.

Abdul-Baki Todashev showed journalists 16 photographs that he said were of his son, Ibragim, in a Florida morgue. He said his son had six gunshot wounds to his torso and one to the back of his head and the pictures were taken by his son's friend, Khusen Taramov.

It was not immediately possible to authenticate the photographs.

The FBI says Todashev was being questioned by an FBI agent and two Massachusetts state troopers about his ties to Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as well as about a 2011 triple slaying in Massachusetts.

Three law enforcement officials said initially that Ibragim Todashev had lunged at the FBI agent with a knife, although two of them later said it was no longer clear what had happened.

The father said his son was "100 percent unarmed."

Taramov confirmed Thursday that he had taken some pictures of Ibragim Todashev's body at an Orlando funeral home and sent them to the father. He said Ibragim Todashev had a decorative sword with a broken handle, but that it was not a weapon.

"The sword wouldn't cut nothing," Tamarov said. "I played with it many times. It wasn't sharp from any angle. It would do the same harm as a piece of wood."

The father said Taramov told him that U.S. agents interrogated him on the street while five officials interrogated Todashev in his Florida house for eight hours on May 22, the night he was shot.

Todashev's father said that his son moved to the U.S. in 2008 on a study exchange program and met Tsarnaev at a boxing gym in Boston in 2011, about a year before he moved to Orlando. He said the two were "not particularly close friends."

Prior to last month's bombings, Todashev underwent an operation for a sports injury and was on crutches, making it physically impossible for him to have been involved in the bombings, his father said. He added that Todashev had recently received a green card and was planning to return to Chechnya for the summer last Friday, two days after he was killed.

The father said he and his brother were interviewed at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on Thursday as they sought a visa to take his son's body back to Chechnya.

FBI agents interrogated the younger Todashev twice before the night he was shot, his father said. He said his son told him that he thought Tsarnaev had been set up to take the blame for the bombings.

"I'd only seen and heard things like that in the movies ? they shoot somebody and then a shot in the head to make sure," Todashev said.

"These just aren't FBI agents, they're bandits," he added.

The FBI wouldn't comment on the claims made by Todashev's father.

The Tsarnaevs' parents have held fast to their belief that their sons were framed. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, dressed all in black and still visibly distressed, showed AP several YouTube videos on an iPad she claimed cleared her sons. They could not be authenticated by the AP.

"I remember when our cat was sick, Tamerlan was sick himself for two days afterward, because he was so worried about her," Tsarnaeva said.

She said Tamerlan told her about Todashev, and that she and her husband had invited him to visit them in Russia, though he never came. Tamerlan later told them that he and Todashev were unlikely to continue training together since they practiced different sports, and he appeared to have lost track of him after Todashev moved to Florida, Tsarnaeva added.

Adult stem cells could hold key to cure type 1 diabetes

May 29, 2013 ? Millions of people with type 1 diabetes depend on daily insulin injections to survive. They would die without the shots because their immune system attacks the very insulin-producing cells it was designed to protect. Now, a University of Missouri scientist has discovered that this attack causes more damage than scientists realized. The revelation is leading to a potential cure that combines adult stem cells with a promising new drug.

The discovery is reported in the current online issue of Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association's flagship research publication. Habib Zaghouani, PhD, J. Lavenia Edwards Chair in Pediatrics, leads the research with his team at the MU School of Medicine.

"We discovered that type 1 diabetes destroys not only insulin-producing cells but also blood vessels that support them," Zaghouani said. "When we realized how important the blood vessels were to insulin production, we developed a cure that combines a drug we created with adult stem cells from bone marrow. The drug stops the immune system attack, and the stem cells generate new blood vessels that help insulin-producing cells to multiply and thrive."

Surrounded by an army of students and a colony of mice, Zaghouani has spent the past 12 years in his lab at MU studying autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes. Often called juvenile diabetes, the disease can lead to numerous complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, osteoporosis and blindness.

Type 1 diabetes attacks the pancreas. The organ, which is about the size of a hand and located in the abdomen, houses cell clusters called islets. Islets contain beta cells that make insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. In people with type 1 diabetes, beta cells no longer make insulin because the body's immune system has attacked and destroyed them.

When the immune system strikes the beta cells, the attack causes collateral damage to capillaries that carry blood to and from the islets. The damage done to the tiny blood vessels led Zaghouani on a new path toward a cure.

In previous studies, Zaghouani and his team developed a drug against type 1 diabetes called Ig-GAD2. They found that treatment with the drug stopped the immune system from attacking beta cells, but too few beta cells survived the attack to reverse the disease. In his latest study, Zaghouani used Ig-GAD2 and then injected adult stem cells from bone marrow into the pancreas in the hope that the stem cells would evolve into beta cells.

"The combination of Ig-GAD2 and bone marrow cells did result in production of new beta cells, but not in the way we expected," Zaghouani said. "We thought the bone marrow cells would evolve directly into beta cells. Instead, the bone marrow cells led to growth of new blood vessels, and it was the blood vessels that facilitated reproduction of new beta cells. In other words, we discovered that to cure type 1 diabetes, we need to repair the blood vessels that allow the subject's beta cells to grow and distribute insulin throughout the body."

Zaghouani is pursuing a patent for his promising treatment and hopes to translate his discovery from use in mice to humans. He is continuing his research with funding from the National Institutes of Health and MU.

"This is extremely exciting for our research team," he said. "Our discovery about the importance of restoring blood vessels has the potential to be applied not only to type 1 diabetes but also a number of other autoimmune diseases."

Alcatel's One Touch Idol now available in the US for $300 unlocked

Alcatel announced today that its One Touch Idol smartphone is now available for the US market, but without a carrier. Weighing in at only 110 grams, the supposed "world's lightest" handset will be sold unlocked for $300 via the company's website. Meant as an entry-level device, the specs betray its low-end status: you get a 4.7-inch qHD (960 x 540) IPS display, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, an 8-megapixel camera and a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU with Android 4.1 in tow. Still, its quad-band GSM and 900 / 2100 MHz HSPA bands mean it'll work with either AT&T or T-Mobile, which should be good news to those who want carrier flexibility. If that sounds like a bargain to you, head on over to the source below to snag one for yourself.

Newborn Rescued From Toilet Pipe

May 28, 2013 8:24am

BEIJING ? Dramatic and graphic video emerged over the weekend from China showing a newborn baby boy being rescued from a sewage pipe.

The 5-pound infant was discovered by residents in Jinhua, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, when they heard cries coming out of a fourth floor squat toilet in a local apartment building.

When the firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered a two-day old baby lodged in the piping below the toilet.? After attempts to pull the baby out of the toilet failed, the rescuers resorted to sawing off a whole section of piping containing the baby and brought it to the neighboring hospital.

The video shows firefighters and doctors taking apart the sewer pipe piece by piece under the newborn was finally revealed from inside. State media reports said that the boy?s umbilical cord and placenta was still attached at the time.

?Fortunately the baby survived. But the person [who abandoned him] is still suspected of attempted murder,? an unidentified police officer told the state media on Hangzhou.com.cn. Police were looking for the parents of the baby boy.

The incident has conjured up intense emotions on Chinese social media especially after the news this weekend of separate newborn discovered in a dumpster in Hebei province. That newborn did not survive.

Posting on China?s twitter-like Sina Weibo user @bhdrswxjs wrote: ?This should be sentenced to death, they are killing their own baby. This is not the only abandoned baby case I saw in the past ten days, one threw in dumpster and died; the other one was fleshed into toilet, those are not actions human beings should do.?

Netizen @Anandeshouxin added: ?This little boy survived, he will do great in the future. The parents will never have a good life. I don?t even know how to curse them when seeing this shocking news.?

In March China?s Ministry of Civil Affairs released data indicating there are 9,394 orphans and abandoned babies across China being cared for by non-government affiliated agencies. This figure obviously does not include the babies who did not make it.

The Chinese-language newsweekly MinSheng reported last year that 100,000 babies are estimated to have been abandoned each year in China. That?s over 250 babies abandoned ever day across this country.

Gene therapy gives mice broad protection to pandemic flu strains, including 1918 flu

May 29, 2013 ? Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania have developed a new gene therapy to thwart a potential influenza pandemic. Specifically, investigators in the Gene Therapy Program, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, directed by James M. Wilson, MD, PhD, demonstrated that a single dose of an adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing a broadly neutralizing flu antibody into the nasal passages of mice and ferrets gives them complete protection and substantial reductions in flu replication when exposed to lethal strains of H5N1 and H1N1 flu virus. These strains were isolated from samples associated from historic human pandemics -- one from the infamous 1918 flu pandemic and another from 2009.

Wilson, Anna Tretiakova, PhD, Senior Research Scientist, Maria P. Limberis, PhD, Research Assistant Professor, all from the Penn Gene Therapy Program, and colleagues published their findings online this week in Science Translational Medicine ahead of print. In addition to the Penn scientists, the international effort included colleagues from the Public Health Agency of Canada, Winnipeg; the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg; and the University of Pittsburgh. Tretiakova is also the director of translational research, and Limberis is the director of animal models core, both with the Gene Therapy Program.

"The experiments described in our paper provide critical proof-of-concept in animals about a technology platform that can be deployed in the setting of virtually any pandemic or biological attack for which a neutralizing antibody exists or can be easily isolated," says Wilson. "Further development of this approach for pandemic flu has taken on more urgency in light of the spreading infection in China of the lethal bird strain of H7N9 virus in humans."

At the Ready Influenza infections are the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and result in almost 500,000 deaths worldwide per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The emergence of a new influenza pandemic remains a threat that could result in a much loss of life and worldwide economic disruption.

There is also interest by the military in developing an off-the-shelf prophylactic vaccine should soldiers be exposed to weaponized strains of infectious agents in biologic warfare.

Human antibodies with broad neutralizing activity against various influenza strains exist but their direct use as a prophylactic treatment is impractical. Now, yearly flu vaccines are made by growing the flu virus in eggs. The viral envelope proteins on the exterior, namely hemagglutinin, are cleaved off and used as the vaccine, but vary from year to year, depending on what flu strains are prevalent. However, high mutation rates in the proteins result in the emergence of new viral types each year, which elude neutralization by preexisting antibodies in the body (specifically specific receptor binding sites on the virus that are the targets of neutralizing antibodies).

This approach has led to annual vaccinations against seasonal strains of flu viruses that are predicted to emerge during the upcoming season. Strains that arise outside of the human population, for example in domestic livestock, are distinct from those that normally circulate in humans, and can lead to deadly pandemics.

These strains are also not effectively controlled by vaccines developed to human strains, as with the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The vaccine development time for that strain, and in general, was not fast enough to support vaccination in response to an emerging pandemic.

Knowing this, the Penn team proposed a novel approach that does not require the elicitation of an immune response, which does not provide sufficient breadth to be useful against any strain of flu other than the one for which it was designed, as with conventional approaches.

The Penn approach is to clone into a vector a gene that encodes an antibody that is effective against many strains of flu and to engineer cells that line the nasal passages to express this broadly neutralizing antibody, effectively establishing broad-based efficacy against a wide range of flu strains.

A Broad Approach The rational for targeting nasal epithelial cells for antibody expression was to focus this expression to the site of the body where the virus usually enters the body and replicates which is the nasal and oral mucosa. Antibodies are normally expressed from B lymphocytes so one challenge was to design vectors that could deliver antibody genes to the non- lymphoid respiratory cells of the nasal and lung passages and could express functional antibody protein.

Targeting the respiratory cells was achieved through the use of a vector based on a primate virus -- AAV9 -- which was discovered in the Wilson laboratory and evaluated previously by Limberis for possibly treating patients with cystic fibrosis. The team constructed a genetic payload for AAV9 that expressed an antibody that was showed by other investigators to have broad activity against flu.

Efficacy of the treatment was tested in mice that were exposed to lethal quantities of three strains of H5N1 and two strains of H1N1, all of which have been associated with historic human pandemics (including the infamous H1N1 1918).

Flu virus rapidly replicated in untreated animals all of which needed to be euthanized. However, pretreatment with the AAV9 vector virtually shut down virus replication and provided complete protection against all strains of flu in the treated animals. The efficacy of this approach was also demonstrated in ferrets, which provide a more authentic model of human pandemic flu infection.

"The novelty of this approach is that we're using AAV and we're delivering the prophylactic vaccine to the nose in a non-invasive manner, not a shot like conventional vaccines that passively transfer antibodies to the general circulation," says Limberis.

"There's a long history of using antibodies for cancer and autoimmune disease, but only two have been approved for infectious diseases," notes Tretikova. "This novel technique has allowed for the development of a prophylactic passive vaccine that is cost effective, easily administered, and quickly manufactured."

The team is working with various stakeholders to accelerate the development of this product for pandemic flu and to explore the potential of AAV vectors as generic delivery vehicles for countermeasures of biological and chemical weapons.

The research was supported in part by ReGenX, the Public Health Agency of Canada (#531252), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (#246355) and the National Institutes of Health (GM083602).

GOP Senate candidate Gomez taking moderate stances

Tuesday May 28, 2013

NEWTON, Mass. -- On the infrequent occasions that Republicans enjoy electoral success in Massachusetts, it?s usually because a candidate can convince voters that he or she isn?t too closely aligned with the national GOP.

Gabriel Gomez, the Republican nominee in the June 25 special election for the U.S. Senate, is trying such an approach in his campaign against longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey. Gomez, a businessman and former Navy SEAL, has cast himself as a moderate Washington outsider beholden neither to his party nor special interests.

"It?s the typical playbook of the Democratic Party, no matter who they are running against, to paint you with the national party," the political newcomer said during a recent campaign appearance before a small, mostly receptive audience at a local chamber of commerce event.

He then rattled off a list of positions that sets him apart from many conservative Republicans. He accused the National Rifle Association of being "dishonest." He called himself a "green Republican" who believes human activity contributes to climate change. On a number of issues, he said he agrees with Democratic President Barack Obama, including on a proposed change in how the government measures inflation for the purpose of adjusting Social Security benefits.

In explaining why he supports gay marriage, Gomez told the story of a friend and classmate at the U.S. Naval Academy who, despite

being one of the highest achievers in the class, was dismissed just before graduation after telling a commanding officer he was gay.

If elected to the Senate, Gomez promised to support a bipartisan immigration reform bill that provides a path to citizenship for some young people living illegally in the country. He also backs wider background checks for gun sales that were included in a bill that recently failed to advance after winning the votes of only four Republican senators.

"The NRA, I think, was dishonest in how they presented that to persuade some senators to vote on that," he said.

It?s Markey, Gomez suggests, who should be criticized for being in lockstep with his party during his 36 years in Congress.

Gomez is hardly the first Massachusetts Republican to try to put some distance between the national party, with mixed results.

Scott Brown scored an upset victory in the 2010 special election to succeed the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy largely by appealing to the state?s large block of moderate independents. But Brown lost his re-election bid to Democrat Elizabeth Warren last year despite casting himself as one of the Senate?s most bipartisan members.

In 2002, Mitt Romney joined a string of Republican governors to win that office on a fiscally conservative, socially moderate platform, though he?d later veer to the right in his bid for the White House.

"I don?t blame (Gomez) trying to distance himself from his party," said John Walsh, chairman of the state Democratic Party. "Because, in Massachusetts at least, the policies of the Republican Party are not supported. In fact, they are roundly rejected."

Walsh cites several issues in which he believes Gomez is aligned with national Republicans, including his opposition to a federal assault weapons ban and his position on abortion.

Gomez has described himself as "pro-life" by his Catholic faith though uninterested in changing abortion access laws. But Walsh notes Gomez?s refusal to say how he might vote on specific abortion-related issues such as whether employers can cite moral grounds to deny coverage for birth control or other services.

"He?s trying to find some fuzzy space so he can pretend he?s not like other Republicans in Washington," Walsh said.

The challenge Gomez faces in winning over large numbers of moderate voters was on display during the question-and-answer portion of the chamber event in Newton, a heavily Democratic Boston suburb.

Ken Jaffe, a businessman from Natick, told Gomez he was an independent who votes for Democrats about "80 percent" of the time. He then pressed the Republican on why he won?t go further on gun control by supporting a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban.

Gomez responded by citing his support for Second Amendment rights and claimed the ban from 1994-2004 failed to reduce gun violence.

But Jaffe was unconvinced.

"There is absolutely no reason in the world why anybody in this country should be selling assault rifles," Jaffe said after the event.

"He?s not going to be able to win anything in this state as long as he takes this stance," Jaffe added, though he wouldn?t rule out the possibility of voting for Gomez in the special election.

Gomez acknowledged many instances in which he supports the national GOP platform while saying he?s "happy" to disagree on others.

"I know who I am, I know where I stand," he said.

The Navy's Largest Chopper Is an Aerial Mine Hunter

The Navy's Largest Chopper Is an Aerial Mine Hunter

Submerged mines were once the scourge of sea warfare, silently lurking in bays and channels to blow a hole in your hull. That's why the US military has developed a trident countermeasure, hunting for the underwater bombs from below the waves, along the surface, and from the air using the biggest bird in the Navy's arsenal, the MH-53E Sea Dragon.

Built by famed defense contractor Sikorsky, the Sea Dragon is derived from the equally mammoth CH-53E Super Stallion but features a larger fuel capacity than the Army version. It's been in service since 1986, with orders to continue until at least 2017. The Sea Dragon measures nearly 100 feet in total length and is 28 feet tall with a 79 foot rotor diameter. A trio of GE 4,380 shp turboshaft engines provide the necessary power to lift 55 troops or 32,000 pounds of cargo as far as 1050 nautical miles.

While the Super Stallion is outfitted with a large cache of weaponry for airborne assaults, the Sea Dragon is instead primarily employed in long range demining operations, Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM). As such, the helicopter carries a variety of mine-sweeping systems such as magnetic minesweeping sleds, mechanical minesweepers, side-scan sonar, GPS, and Doppler radar. The Sea Dragon's digital flight-control system is designed specifically to keep the chopper stable as it's dragging a sled through mine-filled waters. That's not to say it's completely defenseless, the Sea Dragon can be fitted with a .50-cal GAU-21 machine gun for its secondary assault support missions and includes a pair of machine gun mine countermeasures.

While recent upgrades such as night vision systems and forward looking infrared (FLIR) will extend the Sea Dragon's effective operational lifetime, both it and the Super Stallion may soon be replaced by an even more monstrous flying machine, the Sikorsky CH-53K.

Why Are We So Bad at Counting Calories?

The evidence is damning: As calorie counters, Americans pretty much suck. That may be self-evident when you look around at how much millions of us weigh. But research has backed it up: When asked how much we?ve eaten, we reliably underestimate the amount?by a lot.

A new study, just out in the journal BMJ, back ups previous research and further proves that very often we simply don?t realize how much we?re eating. The new study looked at the calorie content of meals from 89 fast-food restaurants in New England and asked adults, teenagers, and school-age kids to guesstimate how much they were eating.

What did the researchers find? The actual median calorie counts for the adults? and teens? meals were 836 calories and 756 calories, respectively. ?But both underestimated their food by 175 calories. ?That may not sound like a lot, but it is because it adds up over time,? says Lisa Young, Ph.D., R.D., a nutritionist in New York City, adjunct professor at New York University, and author of The Portion Teller Plan. ?Also, this is not the only thing they are underestimating,? she adds, meaning that those surveyed also are likely to fail to account for extra fat and sodium, for instance.

?At least two-thirds of all participants underestimated the calorie content of their meals,? wrote the study authors, ?with about a quarter underestimating the calorie content by at least 500 calories.? Eat 500 extra calories every day for just one week and you?ve added one pound right there.

Think you could do better at guesstimating what you?re eating? Take this short quiz and see how you do (the correct answers are at the bottom):

1. A McDonald?s Big Mac has:

a. 550 calories

b. 730 calories

c.? 865 calories

???????????

2. A Subway Chicken and Bacon Ranch Melt (foot-long; 9-grain wheat bread)

a. 490 calories

b. 570 calories

c. 780 calories

3. A Burger King Double Whopper has:

a. 200 calories

b. 255 calories

c. 347 calories

4. Two Dunkin? Donuts chocolate frosted doughnuts have:

a. 300 calories

b. 540 calories

c. 735 calories

5. Three KFC Extra Crispy Tenders have:

a. 380 calories

b. 455 calories

c. 800 calories

?

How can we get better at figuring out what we?re really putting into our mouths, so we can get a handle on our weight and our health? Keep it simple: ?We underestimate larger portions more, so having a small [size] is a better bet,? says Young, adding that most Americans need more education about why it's important to pay attention to nutrition counts (the fast-food chains in the BMJ study did have nutritional information available, but only 5 percent of adults and 2 percent of teenagers used that information to guide the food they chose). And don?t forget to note foods that can have hidden calories, adds Young: ?Sauces, mayo, cheese?many people forget to include these? when totaling up how many calories are in a dish or meal.

Also, be aware of fast-food (and other) restaurants that seem to be healthier, but potentially aren?t. ?There is a health halo with places like Subway,? notes Young. ?People think they are healthier, so they may underestimate those items even more, as they perceive them as healthy.? The new study showed that diners were more likely to underestimate their calorie counts at Subway than they were at McDonald?s, in fact.

Answers:

1. a

2. b

3. c

4. b

5. a

Interpol rejects Russia's 'political' case against fund manager Browder

By Jason Bush

MOSCOW, May 25 - Interpol has refused to include UK-based fund manager William Browder on its international search list after deciding that Russia's tax evasion case against him is "of a predominantly political nature".

The decision is the latest twist in a long-running battle between the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Browder, whose investment company Hermitage Capital was once the largest investor in Russia's equity market.

Browder has spearheaded an international campaign to expose corruption and human rights violations in Russia following the death in 2009 of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer working for Hermitage who was investigating a $230 million tax fraud.

Magnitsky was arrested shortly after alleging that Russian officials were involved in the fraud, and later died in prison while awaiting trial, causing an international uproar.

An Interpol committee on Friday "concluded that the case was of a predominantly political nature" and deleted all information about Browder from its files, it said in a statement posted on its website.

Inclusion in the Lyon, France-based Interpol's database would have facilitated Russia's request for member countries to monitor Browder's whereabouts, enabling Russia to issue an international arrest warrant to the country concerned.

The 190-nation police organization said it had no further comment to make on the case.

"For Interpol to judge this case as being illegitimate and political is highly significant, and just goes to show how far the Putin regime has stepped over the line in the Magnitsky case, and a lot of other cases as well," Browder told Reuters on Saturday.

The U.S. government in April issued a list of Russian officials subject to visa bans and asset freezes in the United States because of alleged involvement in human rights violations under the Magnitsky Act, prompting Moscow to respond with its own list of banned Americans.

Days later, a Moscow court ordered Browder's arrest and placed him on Russia's international wanted list.

Russian prosecutors have accused both Browder and Magnitsky of conspiring to underpay taxes by $16 million by using tax breaks for disabled employees. Their supporters have said the charges are trumped up.

A posthumous trial of Magnitsky started in March.

Alexei Pushkov, the head of the foreign affairs committee of Russia's parliamentary lower house, told Interfax news agency on Saturday that Browder had "mobilized significant political resources" to have Russia's request rejected.

"I think some influential quarters have put pressure on Interpol," Pushkov said.

Browder is presently lobbying European governments to follow the United States in imposing sanctions against Russian officials.

"The objective of the Russian government was to paralyze my European Magnitsky sanctions campaign by making it impossible to travel without fear of being arrested," he said.

The Suspects Wore Louboutins
Nancy Jo Sales ??Vanity Fair ? Mar 2010
Film: The Bling Ring

The motley gang of L.A. teens that cat-burgled celebrities, sometimes repeatedly, in search of designer clothes, jewelry, and something to do.

?On November 16, [Alexis] Neiers arrived at Los Angeles Superior Court for her arraignment with an E! reality crew in tow. Her show, originally intended to be about her life as a party girl on the Hollywood scene, had now become a chronicle of her effort to stay out of jail. She was being charged that day with one count of residential burglary of Orlando Bloom?s home. In the media, she was being called a member of ?the Burglar Bunch,? ?the Bling Ring,? nicknames for the most successful and outrageous burglary gang in recent Hollywood memory: a gang of well-off kids from the Valley.

?Camera crews from local news stations,?Good Morning America, Dateline NBC,?and TMZ were waiting outside Department 30 on the third floor of the courthouse. Producers from various shows murmured as Neiers?a former hip-hop- and pole-dancing instructor?sat calmly on a bench, allowing a makeup woman to touch her up.

?A leggy girl with long, dark hair and shimmering blue-green eyes, Neiers was wearing a tweed miniskirt, a pink sweater, and six-inch Christian Louboutin heels. ?I have a pretty cool shoe collection going on right now,? she said.?

Orchid Fever
Susan Orlean ? The New Yorker ? Jan 1995
Film: Adaptation

An orchid-enthusiast goes to battle in Florida.

?John Laroche is a tall guy, skinny as a stick, pale-eyed, slouch-shouldered, and sharply handsome, in spite of the fact that he is missing all his front teeth. He has the posture of al dente spaghetti and the nervous intensity of someone who plays a lot of video games. He is thirty-four years old, and works for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, setting up a plant nursery on the tribal reservation near Miami. The Seminole nicknames for Laroche are Crazy White Man and Troublemaker. My introduction to Laroche took place last summer, in the new Collier County Courthouse, in Naples, Florida. The occasion was a hearing following Laroche's arrest for illegally taking endangered wild orchids, which he is passionate about, from the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, which is a place he adores. Laroche did not dress for the occasion. He was wearing wraparound Mylar sunglasses, a cotton-blend shirt printed with some sort of scenic design, and trousers that bagged around his rear. At the hearing, he was called forward and asked to state his name and address and to describe his experience in working with plants. Laroche sauntered to the center of the courtroom. He jutted out his chin. He spoke in a rasping, draggy voice. He stuck his thumbs in his belt loops and said, "I've been a professional horticulturist for approximately twelve years. I've owned a plant nursery of my own. ... I have extensive experience with orchids, and the asexual micropropagation of orchids under aseptic cultures." Then he grinned and said to the court, "I'm probably the smartest person I know."

The Great Escape
Joshuah Bearman ? Wired ??April 2007
Film: Argo

How the CIA used a fake science fiction film to sneak six Americans out of revolutionary Iran.

?Everyone was in costume before dawn on January 28, 1980. Cora Lijek had used sponge curlers to give herself a Shirley Temple look. She thumbed through the script as they waited. Kathy Stafford donned heavy, bohemian-looking glasses, pinned up her hair, and carried a sketch pad and folder with Kirby?s concept drawings. Mark Lijek?s dirty-blond beard had been darkened with mascara. Anders thought of their escape as an adventure and flung himself into his role as Argo?s flamboyant director: He appeared in a shirt two sizes too small, buttoned only halfway up his hairy chest to reveal an improvised silver medallion. He wore sunglasses, combed his hair over his ears, and acted slightly effeminate. Schatz played with his lens. During the previous two days, they?d done several dress rehearsals, with a Farsi-speaking staffer from the Canadian embassy dressing up in fatigues for mock interrogations, probing for cracks in their cover. They?d learned the movie?s story line and their characters? backgrounds and motivations and were now waiting, essentially, for call time. By 4am, they?d packed, thanked their hosts, and were on their way to Mehrabad Airport.

The Man Who Knew Too Much
Marie Brenner ??Vanity Fair ? May 1996
Film: The Insider

The man who blew the whistle on big tobacco.

?It was never Jeffrey Wigand?s ambition to become a central figure in the great social chronicle of the tobacco wars. By his own description, Wigand is a linear thinker, a plodder. On January 30, when he and I arrange to meet at the sports bar at the Hyatt Regency in Louisville, he is in the first phase of understanding that he has entered a particular American nightmare where his life will no longer be his to control. His lawyer will later call this period ?hell week.? Wigand has recently learned of a vicious campaign orchestrated against him, and is trying to document all aspects of his past. ?How would you feel if you had to reconstruct every moment of your life?? he asks me, tense with anxiety. He is deluged with requests for interviews. TV vans are often set up at DuPont Manual, the magnet high school where he now teaches. In two days Wigand, the former head of research and development (R&D) at the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., will be on the front page ofThe Wall Street Journal for the second time in a week. Five days from now, he will be on 60 Minutes.

?Wigand is trapped in a war between the government and its attempts to regulate the $50 billion tobacco industry and the tobacco companies themselves, which insist that the government has no place in their affairs. Wigand is under a temporary restraining order from a Kentucky state judge not to speak of his experiences at Brown & Williamson (B&W). He is mired in a swamp of charges and countercharges hurled at him by his former employer, the third-largest tobacco company in the nation, the manufacturer of Kool, Viceroy, and Capri cigarettes.?

The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon
Elizabeth Gilbert ? GQ ??Mar 1997
Film: Coyote Ugly

Adventures in bartending.

?Lil could drink with her customers until they were all blind, and then she'd make men suck tequila from her boots (and sometimes, I'm sorry to report, from her socks) while maintaining complete control. Lil was always in charge. Men loved her, but their love was tempered with a healthy touch of fear.

?My favorite story from the canon of Lil goes like this: One night Lil traveled all the way to the Upper East Side to play pool at a snobbish tavern. An affluent-looking young man in a suit and tie made the unwise comment that women shouldn't be allowed to play pool, since they only got in the way of men. So Lil challenged the fellow and his friends to a game of pool. She ended up beating them three times in a row.

?Humiliated, the young man claimed, ?You're winning only because we've been drinking and you haven't.?

?Here he made his mistake.

??How many rounds of drinks have you had?? Lil asked.

??Four,? the man said.

?So Lil ordered herself five shots of Wild Turkey. She slammed the shots down, one after the other. Then Lil beat those little pricks once more just to teach them some manners.?

The Storm
Sebastian Junger ? Outside ? Oct 1994

Six young men, a boat, and the worst gale in a century.

?By now the storm had engulfed nearly the entire eastern seaboard. Even in protected Boston Harbor, a data buoy measured wave heights of 30 feet. A Delta Airlines pilot at Boston's Logan Airport was surprised to see spray topping 200-foot construction cranes on Deer Island. Sitting on the runway waiting for clearance, his air speed indicator read 80 miles per hour. Off Cape Cod, a sloop named theSatori lost its life raft, radios, and engine. The three people in its crew had resigned themselves to writing good-bye notes when they were finally rescued 200 miles south of Nantucket by a Coast Guard swimmer who jumped, untethered, from a helicopter into the roiling waves. An Air National Guard helicopter ran out of fuel off Long Island, and its crew had to jump one at a time through the darkness into the sea. One man was killed and the other four were rescued after drifting throughout the night. All along the coast, waves and storm surge combined to act as "dams" that prevented rivers from flowing into the sea. The Hudson backed up 100 miles to Albany and caused flooding, so did the Potomac.

?Brown tried in vain all day Wednesday to radio Tyne. That evening he finally got through to Linda Greenlaw, who said she'd last heard Billy Tyne talking to other boats on the radio Monday night. "Those men sounded scared, and we were scared for them," she said later. Later that night Brown finally alerted the U.S. Coast Guard."

At age 22, the author went undercover at his old high school. Here?s what he found.

?It was nearly the end of the line. The awards were about to be announced, mimeographed caps-and-gowns information had gone out to the seniors along with Grad Nite tickets. The annuals were almost ready: Spicoli was counting the hours.

?Since Spicoli was a sophomore, an underclassman, there weren?t many graduation functions he could attend. Tonight was one of the few, and he wasn?t about to miss it. It was the Ditch Day party, the evening blowout of the day that underclassmen secretly selected toward the end of the year to ditch en masse. Spicoli hadn?t been at school all day, and now he was just about ready to leave the house for the party out in Del Mar. He hadn?t eaten all day: He wanted the full effect of the hallucinogenic mushrooms he?d procured just for the poor man?s Grad Nite-Ditch Night.

?Spicoli had taken just a little bit of one mushroom, just to check the potency. He could feel it coming on now as he sat in his room surrounded by his harem of naked women and surf posters. It was just a slight buzz, like a few hits off the bong. Spicoli knew they were good mushrooms. But if he didn?t leave soon. he might be too high to drive before he reached the party. One had to craft his buzz, Spicoli was fond of saying.?

The Boys in the Bank
P.F. Kluge, Thomas Moore ??Life ? Sep 1972
Film: Dog Day Afternoon

A young Brooklyn man attempts a bank robbery to finance his lover?s sex change surgery.

?By mid-evening, the atmosphere in the bank has changed markedly. To put a damper on Wojtowiez's budding publicity campaign, police order the phones to be cut, isolating both robbers and hostages, who now divert themselves by listening to the New York Mets eke out a 4- to-2 victory over the Houston Astros. Gone, too, are the police floodlights which had bathed the bank in the aura of a theater on opening night. Worst of all, the air-conditioning is also shut off, and a trip by Barrett and Wojtowicz to the controls in the cellar of the bank fails to restore it. When they come back upstairs, Wojtowicz decides to shove a desk in front of the cellar door, knocks his gun against the desk, and discharges a shot dangerously close to his own foot. The sound of the shot sends hostages diving onto the floor and under tables. Still, for every moment of fear, the hostages have moments of weird laughter and something that might also be friendship. After all, the robbers and hostages are in this together, but the determined men with guns outside the bank are strangers.?

Hanging with surfer girls in Maui.

?The Maui surfer girls love each other's hair. It is awesome hair, long and bleached by the sun, and it falls over their shoulders straight, like water, or in squiggles, like seaweed, or in waves. They are forever playing with it?yanking it up into ponytails, or twisting handfuls and securing them with chopsticks or pencils, or dividing it as carefully as you would divide a pile of coins and then weaving it into tight yellow plaits. Not long ago I was on the beach in Maui watching the surfer girls surf, and when they came out of the water they sat in a row facing the ocean, and each girl took the hair of the girl in front of her and combed it with her fingers and crisscrossed it into braids. The Maui surfer girls even love the kind of hair that I dreaded when I was their age, 14 or so?they love that wild, knotty, bright hair, as big and stiff as carpet, the most un-straight, un-sleek, un-ordinary hair you could imagine, and they can love it, I suppose, because when you are young and on top of the world you can love anything you want, and just the fact that you love it makes it cool and fabulous. A Maui surfer girl named Gloria Madden has that kind of hair?thick red corkscrews striped orange and silver from the sun, hair that if you weren't beautiful and fearless you'd consider an affliction that you would try to iron flat or stuff under a hat. One afternoon I was driving two of the girls to Blockbuster Video in Kahului. It was the day before a surfing competition, and the girls were going to spend the night at their coach's house up the coast so they'd be ready for the contest at dawn. On contest nights, they fill their time by eating a lot of food and watching hours of surf videos, but on this particular occasion they decided they needed to rent a movie, too, in case they found themselves with 10 or 20 seconds of unoccupied time. On our way to the video store, the girls told me they admired my rental car and said that they thought rental cars totally ripped and that they each wanted to get one. My car, which until then I had sort of hated, suddenly took on a glow. I asked what else they would have if they could have anything in the world. They thought for a moment, and then the girl in the backseat said, "A moped and thousands of new clothes. You know, stuff like thousands of bathing suits and thousands of new board shorts."

Racer X

Film: The Fast and the Furious

?The hands drop. 10 mph: Off the starting line, the Nissan pulls ahead by one car length. 40 mph: Still in first gear, the driver jams the stick into second, and his head snaps back. The tires let out a brief squeal. 100 mph: The Starion pulls closer. There?s a halting moment when it looks like the Nissan might lose. It lasts about one hundredth of a second. 160 mph: Gritting his teeth, the man behind the wheel of the Nissan begins to shake from the speed; his vision is a blur. He doesn?t see the Starion closing in. Crossing the finish line, the Nissan driver, Rafael Estevez, wins by one car length. In less than a minute, the guy in the Mitsubishi has lost $7,500. Glowing with confidence, Estevez immediately challenges him for $2,500 and offers an 18-car lead and beats him again. Estevez, a 30-year-old Dominican drag racer from Washington Heights, is considered an OG among a growing legion of young speed junkies terrorizing the back alleys, highways, and legal racetracks around New York City.?

Alternative Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis ? Hot Article Depot

This is a plantar fasciitis tactic driven by valuable experience. Before I start, here?s just a bit about me: I am an exercise physiologist, personal fitness trainer, senior high school track and also cross country coach. In a nutshell, understand a ton with regards to running combined with running injuries. I also have reoccurring plantar fasciitis. By reoccurring, I mean: I often have it virtually at bay, and consequently commonly don?t feel anything at all, still it?s consistently there, simply waiting to show up if I do the improper action or just don?t maintain my routine. I have already been through the traditional treatment recommended by conventional health professionals (cortisone injections, heel stretch socks, boot, and the like.), with no relief. I think I am not alone with this. I over time learned quite a lot over time concerning this condition and also believe I have a fine strategy that may assist you. Here is my advice:

Free up the Calf Muscle tissue-In general, I feel limited calf muscles are a leading offender in plantar fasciitis. Mainly because restricted calves pull on the heel bone causing tightness on the plantar fascia. You can focus your attention on the underside of the feet all you want, but in the case the calves are the cause, you?re wasting your time and energy. Indeed, I would advise calf stretching, however to begin with, I recommend finding a great massage therapist who can dive in there and free up tight muscle mass and trigger points so your stretching will actually sustain the mobility with the aid of a flexibility regimen.

Fascia Release in the Feet- The calf muscle tissue work I referred to made a great difference, however I actually never felt completely fixed. I at some point stumbled opon a local chiropractic doctor who guaranteed relief in about three visits. I headed over to meet with him and then took him up on his deal. Certainly, after three (quite torturous) trips, I really felt lots better. He basically dug far into the base of my foot and released what he regarded ?adhered? fascia. When he was complete, I was back to running pain free.

Calf Flexibility- Though I?d really love to have an every day sport massage, I can?t afford it. So, I have to maintain my calf and feet overall flexibility through stretching. I have a lot of views on flexibility, but that would be its own article alone. I can say that I believe that the majority of people over-stretch muscles groups, ultimately causing further problem. It is my opinion joint movements ought to be gentle and limited to only just what your muscle tissue and joints allow.

Hamstring Flexibility- I didn?t realize it initially, and yet stretching your hamstrings really can help your heel discomfort. Just as tight calves produce heal problems, tight hamstrings end up in restricted calves, which contribute to restricted feet and consequently heel discomfort. Simply, don?t neglect your hamstrings in your flexibility routine.

Acupuncture- After I had plantar fasciitis licked via the fascia release and flexibility, I began back to serious running. Subsequently however, I began to have more soreness. I went back to the two healthcare professionals, yet didn?t get the very same big benefits as the first experience. Frustrated, I decided to give acupuncture a go. Even though I was rather skeptical, freeing up the ?chi? really worked well. I was truly pain free and back to running with my high school cross country team within more or less four visits.

These days, my only feeling is tightness in the mornings before I do my stretching regime. Whenever I go backpacking, or perhaps over-do it in some way, I pay for it for a couple of days or more, but nevertheless quickly get back on track. Once again, I feel it?s permanently destined to be a factor, but at least I am back to a vigorous way of life.

Lisa Copeland: 8 Dating Turnoffs Men Over 50 Should Stop Doing

Here's a heads up for the post 50 single men out there... We ladies are so excited when you choose us as the "girl" you want to meet. Hours before our date with you, we are worrying whether you'll like us. Our bedroom floor is littered with clothes as we look for just the perfect outfit to impress you. We do our best to look good, hoping the two of us click. Then the date happens and sometimes we're bewildered by who we meet.

1. Gentlemen, please dress like you care about yourself. You don't have to wear a suit to impress us but it would be nice if you didn't wear your baggiest jeans and a stained shirt. You may be losing weight but there are a zillion discount stores out there that will gladly sell you a nice pair of jeans and a polo style shirt for less than $50. It's worth the investment if you want to get a second date with us.

2. Women are really turned off and have no interest in kissing your bad teeth or skimming their lips over visible skin tags on your neck. Aging takes its toll on all of us physically, but don't let that be an excuse for being sloppy. You may be the greatest guy on the planet with the most sensual lips but if your teeth are missing or your skin has developed tags, then I guarantee you're getting passed over for an issue that can be easily fixed with a quick visit to your doctor or dentist.

3. Please choose a picture that looks like you for your online dating profile. A friend recently had a date with a man who was 100 pounds heavier than his online picture revealed. She got to the restaurant and was unable to identify her date. She resorted to calling him, figuring the guy who picked his phone up was her date. Show us who you really are. Doing a bait and switch with your pictures, hoping we'll like you in person only makes us wonder what else you're hiding.

4. Please don't start our date by telling us gross stories like your dog has fleas, especially if we've hugged you. A client of mine actually had this happen. There's no way we want to expose ourselves to situations that might be contagious. If anything, we'll want to leave so we can go home and fumigate our clothes. Yuck!

5. If you ask us out for a first date, please pay. We're happy to share the bill with you at a later date but whoever does the asking should be the one pulling their wallet out. Please don't ask us out if you can't even afford a cup of coffee. Get your financial situation straightened out before dating.

6. We know if you like us, you want to impress us with all you do and have. You drone on and on about all the great things in your life, even showing us pictures of your house, your car, your landscaping and your dog. We want to get to know you, but a one-way monologue is boring. We were taught as little girls to make you feel good so we listen. Most of us are not sure where to interject without appearing rude. It would be so helpful if you asked us questions too. Dialogue is much more fun!

7. Men, as you've aged you've become far more passionate in your political views. Many a woman has been forced to listen to you pontificate about the world and how you feel it should be run. There's nothing wrong with sharing your views. Just don't lecture us for an hour and then expect us to go out with you again. After 10 minutes, you've totally turned us off.

8. Lastly, please don't stick your tongue down our throats at the end of a first date when you like us. A gentle kiss feels so much nicer. Women are far more into romantic love and a slow gentle kiss will make us want you more. The tongue thrust makes us think you're at best overly aggressive and at worst a creep.

Okay, over 50's men out there, this was tough on you. My next article will be the biggest things women do to turn you off. If fact, feel free to make suggestions for what I should include in the comments.

In the meantime, if you really want to impress a woman consider keeping these eight turnoffs out of your dating repertoire. You'll have far better luck finding the woman of your dreams when you do.

Earlier on Huff/Post50:

  • New Blood At The Party

Sometimes it feels like the foundation of your social life is so strong that you no longer find the opportunity to meet new and exciting people. Throw a barbecue or party in which guests bring a friend that no one in the group knows. Alternatively, tag along with a friend the next time their office has a company picnic or function -- this is a great way to meet somebody who you know is responsible enough to hold down a career and who you can 'check out' with an acquainted friend before you agree to a date.

  • Break The Gender Divide

There's no longer a stigma about a woman learning to golf or a man taking a Pilates class, though such activities are still gender lopsided enough one way or the other to open up the dating options for the minority sex. In time you'll be able to go to a local public course and complete someone else's foursome, or cap off an exercise class by going for coffee with some of your fellow students -- both of which will give you the opportunity to meet a host of new people (most likely of the opposite sex). Just make sure you're doing something you want to do -- it would be a shame to begin a relationship under false pretenses.

  • Volunteer

Organizations such as "Habitat For Humanity" allow you to come into contact with people of all ages and from all walks of life, all of whom have strong, respectable values. And it's not just a great chance to meet a prospective date -- volunteering attracts interesting, good-natured people who themselves are excited to meet new faces and make friends.

  • Join A Club

Book clubs are great places to meet well-read, like-minded adults -- you can usually find one by calling your local library. Similarly, wine clubs, outdoors clubs and gardening clubs are good options as well depending on your interests. Joining a club allows you to grow as an individual and sets up the opportunity for you to meet someone who shares a common interest.

  • Go Online

Singles over 50 are flocking to the online dating world more than any other demographic. It would be a shame to let 20th century prejudices about online dating spoil the opportunities that could await you with a membership. The perception that dating sites attract eccentrics or shut-ins is a dying one, but if you need convincing, just see for yourself the array of adults turning to sites like "Match" and "eHarmony" to help them begin meaningful relationships with interesting people. The Board Game Family Alien Frontiers: Factions expansion review ...

Alien Frontiers: Factions board game

Bring on the Factions!

Alien Frontiers is another great board game that sits in our Family Favorites board games list. Not only that, but it also made Trevor?s Top 8 Best Board Games list. With only 8 games on the list, that?s a pretty high distinction.

So how would the expansion Alien Frontiers: Factions affect our opinion of the game?
Trevor sums it up simply, ?Awesome!?

We still haven?t gotten Brooke or Mom to play Alien Frontiers, but the boys and I think the Factions expansion only enhances the game. And it?s highly likely that we won?t play Alien Frontiers without it. In fact, if I were a betting man, I think it would be a sure bet.

What comes in the Factions expansion?

If you need a refresher on Alien Frontiers, or haven?t heard of it before ? first jump back to our original video and written review of Alien Frontiers.

What?s the draw of Alien Frontiers: Factions?
As the name suggests, the biggest draw are the new Faction boards. But that?s not all. With the Factions alone, it might be borderline on whether we?d play with the expansion every time. The Factions expansion also adds in 8 new Alien Tech cards and 24 Agenda cards that beef the game up even more.

Faction Board example.

Faction Boards
Alien Frontiers is typically categorized as a ?worker placement? board game. That essentially means that players can place their token (or some other component) on spots on the board that will grant resources, special abilities, or actions. Players then utilize the combination of things they gather to build up elements that grant victory points or other winning conditions.

In Alien Frontiers, there are 9 areas on the board where players can place their ships (dice) to gain resources or other special actions. The new Faction Boards add even more places for players to place their ships.

A few more Faction Board examples.

Rather than being limited to the central board, each player will have a random Faction Board in front of them where players can also dock their ships.

The cool thing about Faction boards is that they grant 2 abilities. One ability is automatically granted to the owner of the board. The second ability on the board is granted to the person who docks their ship on the board. If someone else docks on your Faction to use that ability, they have to pay you an energy resource. Players can also dock their own ships on their own Faction if they want to use that second ability as well (obviously not paying themselves a fee to do so).

The other cool thing is that not all Faction Boards get into play. There are 8 Faction Boards in the expansion, but players randomly select 1 board per player in the game. So each time you play, there will be different abilities to utilize. Great way to mix it up a bit.

Check out some of the Agenda cards!

Agenda Cards
While the Faction Boards are pretty cool, we think the Agenda cards pack an even bigger punch. Why? Because they introduce a hidden scoring element.

Alien Frontiers has a score track where players can always see who?s in the lead on points. If constantly fluctuates during the game as players place colonies, lose control of regions, or steal Alien Tech cards that grand victory points. Always back and forth.

One of the things we love about Alien Frontiers is how much things can change in the last few turns of the game. Players can swing in with lucky dice rolls or play Alien Tech cards that shift the balance of power on contested regions of the planet and thus affect everyone on the score track.

Playing with added elements from the Upgrade Pack.

The Agenda cards can throw in an additional end-of-game swing. Every Agenda card has two agendas on it which give victory points based on special criteria. If a player meets the criteria on their Agenda card, they get an extra point. And some of those points will be hidden until the end of the game ? which can propel a player just enough to swipe victory away from others.

Each Agenda card has an In-Game Agenda and an Endgame Agenda. The one of the left is an in-game situation. If a players meets that agenda during the game, they can reveal their agenda to score and immediate point. The one on the right is the endgame agenda that players just reveal at the end of the game.

Cool bubble colonies!

Players start the game with 3 random Agenda cards and can get more during the game. However, each player can never have more than 3 Agenda cards. So if they get more, they?ll have to choose which to discard (unless you?ve got the special Alien Tech card that let?s you keep 4).

Love the Agenda cards!

5th Player

Many extra goodies.

Alien Frontier: Factions also comes with components for a 5th player. Like I mentioned earlier though, we haven?t been able to entice the girls in our family to join us in a game, so we haven?t tried playing with 5 yet. We can only imagine it adds it?s own intensity as the docking spots on the board remain filled and become more valuable.

But of course we?ve played with the cool purple dice and colonies! They?re too colorful to pass up.

Adding a 5th player to the game will definitely increase the time the game takes to play, but we plan on giving it a shot with 5 players soon.

Even more Alien Frontiers Goodies

Faction Pack #1

We should also mention that there?s more than just Alien Frontiers: Factions. Clever Mojo Games has already added Faction Pack #1 and an Upgrade Pack! The components in the base game are very high quality. The board is fabulous, the cards are great stock, and the wooden colonies are nice. But the Upgrade Pack adds some additional visual and tactile fun to the game.

The Upgrade Pack delivers cool Colony miniatures and Field Generator miniatures that supplement the theme of the game. Just take a look at the photos and tell us what you?d rather play with ? the wooden colonies or these cool bubble colonies. We pick bubble colonies all the way.

Another simple addition in the Alien Frontiers Upgrade Pack are the Dockcover tokens. This are handy when playing with less than 4 players. Sure the docks already on the board indicate which spaces to use with less than 4 players, but that can frequently be forgotten. Instead, use these little cardboard pieces to cover of the docks that aren?t used in 2- and 3- player games. Another nice addition. Great thinking Clever Mojo Games!

Upgrade Pack ? upgrade to sweet components!

Fits in the box!
We?ll wrap up our review with this sweet thought ? it all fits in the original game box!
No worrying about what to do with all the new components and how to store them because they all fit nicely together with still more room to spare. Which is great because we know more Alien Frontiers expansions are yet to come.

Thanks Game Salute and Clever Mojo Games for providing Alien Frontiers and the expansions ? it?s a fantastic board game that keeps getting better!
