Running Paws

According to an old legend, when the end of the world comes, Paradise will appear; however, only wolves will know how to find it. Although wolves are believed to have been hunted to extinction nearly two hundred years ago, they still exist....

4 Characteristics of a Strategy that are Conducive to Success ...

Strategy is about winning. Strategy is not a detailed plan or program of instructions; it is a unifying theme that gives coherence and direction to the actions and decisions of an individual or an organization.

Two basic components of strategy analysis:
1) The analysis of the external environment of the firm (mainly industry analysis) and
2) The analysis of the internal environment (primarily analysis of the firm?s resources and capabilities).

Madonna in popular entertainment, General Giap and the North Vietnamese armed forces in warfare, and Lance Armstrong in cycling. Can the success of these diverse individuals and the organizations they led be attributed to any common factors?

For none of these three examples can success be attributed to overwhelmingly superior resources:

  • Madonna possesses vitality, intelligence and magnetism, but lacks outstanding talents as a vocalist, musician or actress.
  • The military, human, and economic resources of the Vietnamese communists were dwarfed by those of the U.S. and South Vietnam. Yet, with the U.S. evacuation from Saigon in 1975, the world?s most powerful nation was humiliated by one of the world?s poorest.
  • Lance Armstrong possessed a powerful combination of physical and psychological attributes. Yet these endowments were not markedly superior to other top-class cyclists?especially after Armstrong?s near-death encounter with cancer.

Nor can their success be attributed either exclusively or primarily to luck. For all three, lucky breaks provided opportunities at critical junctures. None, however, was the beneficiary of a consistent run of good fortune. More important than luck was the ability to recognize opportunities when they appeared and to have the clarity of direction and the flexibility necessary to exploit these chances.

The key common ingredient in all three success stories above was the presence of a soundly formulated and effectively implemented?strategy.?These strategies did not exist as a plan; in most the strategy was not even made explicit. Yet, in all three, we can observe a consistency of direction based on a clear understanding of the ?game? being played and a keen awareness of how to maneuver into a position of advantage.

  • Underpinning Madonna?s many years as a superstar has been a strategy built on dedication, opportunism, reinvention of herself and a well-coordinated multimarket presence.
  • The victory of the Vietnamese communist forces over the French and then the Americans is a classic example of how a sound strategy pursued with total commitment over a long period can succeed against vastly superior resources. The key was Giap?s strategy of a protracted war of limited engagement. With the U.S. constrained by domestic and international opinion from unleashing its full military might, the strategy was unbeatable once it began to sap the willingness of the U.S. government to persevere with a costly, unpopular foreign war.
  • Lance Armstrong?s domination of the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005 was because he and his team did the most effective job of analyzing the requirements for success in the race, developing a strategy around those requirements and executing it almost faultlessly.

What do these examples tell us about the characteristics of a strategy that are conducive to success? In all three stories, four common factors stand out :

1. Goals that are simple, consistent, and long term.?All three individuals displayed a single-minded commitment to a clearly recognized goal that was pursued steadfastly over a substantial part of their lifetime.

  • Madonna?s career featured a relentless drive for stardom in which other dimensions of her life were absorbed within her career.
  • North Vietnamese efforts were unified and focused on the ultimate goal of reuniting Vietnam under communist rule and expelling a foreign army?from Vietnamese soil. By contrast, U.S. efforts in Vietnam were bedeviled by confused objectives.
  • On his return to professional cycling in 1998, Lance Armstrong committed to a single goal: winning the Tour de France.

2. Profound understanding of the competitive environment.?All three individuals designed their strategies around a deep and insightful appreciation of the arena in which they were competing.

  • Fundamental to Madonna?s continuing success has been a shrewd understanding of the ingredients of stardom and the basis of popular appeal. This extends from the basic marketing principle that ?sex sells? to recognition of the need to manage gatekeepers of the critical media distribution channels. Her periodic reincarnations reflect an acute awareness of changing attitudes, styles, and social norms.
  • Giap understood his enemy and the battlefield conditions where he would engage them. Most important was appreciation of the political predicament of U.S. presidents in their need for popular support in waging a foreign war.
  • Lance Armstrong and team director Johan Bruyneel took analysis of the requirements for success in the Tour de France to unprecedented levels of detail and sophistication.

3. Objective appraisal of resources.?All three strategies were effective in exploiting internal strengths, while protecting areas of weakness.

  • By positioning herself as a ?star,? Madonna exploited her abilities to develop and project her image, to self-promote and to exploit emerging trends while avoiding being judged simply as a rock singer or an actress. Her live performances rely heavily on a large team of highly qualified dancers, musicians, vocalists, choreographers and technicians, thus compensating for any weaknesses in her own performing capabilities.
  • Giap?s strategy was carefully designed to protect against his army?s deficiencies in arms and equipment while exploiting the commitment and loyalty of his troops.
  • Armstrong?s campaign to win the Tour de France was based on two key strengths: unmatched determination to win and superior team-building capability.

4. Effective implementation.?Without effective implementation, the best-laid strategies are of little use. Critical to the success of Madonna, Giap, and Armstong was their effectiveness as leaders in terms of their capacity to reach decisions, energy in implementing them, and ability to foster loyalty and commitment among subordinates. All three built organizations that allowed effective marshaling of resources and capabilities and quick responses to changes in the competitive environment.

?

Whether we look at warfare, chess, politics, sport, or business, the success of individuals and organizations is seldom the outcome of a purely random process. Nor is superiority in initial endowments of skills and resources typically the determining factor. Strategies that build on the basic four elements almost always play an influential role.

They are goal focused; their career goals have taken primacy over the multitude of life?s other goals?friendship, love, leisure, knowledge, spiritual fulfillment. They know the environments within which they play and tend to be fast learners in terms of understanding the keys to advancement. They know themselves in terms of both strengths and weaknesses, and they implement their career strategies with commitment, consistency and determination.

Here is a list of the day?s latest China real estate news collected from around the web:

  • China property firms increase land holdings

At a time when local governments are eager to boost revenues, China?s major property developers have accelerated their land purchases amidst a cautious recovery in the real estate market.

The country?s top real estate firms led by China Vanke Co. Ltd. have taken advantage of low land prices and have broaden their land banks with about $1.34 billion (8.87 billion yuan) in first- and second-tier cities at the onset of the fourth quarter, official data from local governments showed.

  • China property transactions rise in November

Property transactions rose sharply in 36 out of 40 cities surveyed in the week ending November 18, with Harbin, in Northeast China?s Heilongjiang province, recording the highest weekly growth of 971.67 percent year-on-year, according to the latest industry figures.

Based on the findings, China Index Academy, a property research organization under China?s online real estate firm Soufun, now suggests that the total sales performance for November will hit record levels.

  • Inventory may hold back prices of mainland real estate

Increased property sales, stabilising home prices, and aggressive land purchases by major developers all point to a positive outlook for the mainland real estate market, say property analysts.

But beneath the surface, they warn, lurks a hidden worry ? sizeable inventories ? which could emerge to derail improving sentiment next year.

  • Chinese investors snap up UK properties

INVESTORS from China and the Middle East are snapping up properties in Bristol city centre.?A report from property firm CBR into the state of the market found wealthy foreign investors were flocking to the UK in search of bargains.?And the report highlighted Bristol as an investment hotspot which has found particular favour with Chinese investors.

Cohort study: Use of systemic glucocorticoids and risk of colorectal ...

Little is known about the effect of systemic glucocorticoids and whether there is an association with the development of colorectal cancer. Previous studies have evaluated glucocorticoid therapy and colorectal cancer risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, who have an increased risk of cancer because of their disease.

?

To investigate, researchers conducted a large prospective nested population-based case?control study in Denmark examining this association, both overall and according to cancer stage.

?

The Danish Cancer Registry identified 14,158 patients with a first-time diagnosis of colorectal cancer from 1991 through 2010. For each colorectal cancer case, the Danish Civil Registration System was used to select 10 population controls matched on age and gender. For each case and control, the researchers identified all dispensed prescriptions of glucocorticoids prior to the index date.

?

The following findings were reported:

?

??Frequent use of systemic glucocorticoids (defined as >2 prescriptions) was not associated with overall colorectal cancer risk [adjusted OR (aOR) = 0.93 (95% CI: 0.85?1.00)], compared with never/rare use (?2 prescriptions).

??Associations according to duration of use and doses (quartiles of cumulative prednisolone equivalents) were also near the null.

??Examining colorectal cancer by stage, no substantial associations were found between long-term use (>5 years) of high-dose (>5500 mg) systemic glucocorticoids and localised [aOR = 1.12 (95% CI: 0.81?1.55)] or metastatic [aOR = 0.82 (95% CI: 0.59?1.14)] cancer.

?

The authors concluded that they found no evidence of an overall association between frequent use of systemic glucocorticoids and colorectal cancer risk. They note that although results were close to null, long-term use of medium- or high-dose systemic glucocorticoids slightly increased risk of localised colorectal cancer, and decreased risk of metastatic cancer.

(AP) ? The M23 rebels pressed ahead with their seizure of territory and towns in eastern Congo on Wednesday and said they intend to topple the government of President Joseph Kabila.

The rebels took control of the eastern Congo town of Sake in a bid to move toward the provincial capital of Bukavu.

"Kabila has to go. We want our country back," said M23 Col. Vianney Kazarama to cheers from thousands gathered at the stadium in Goma, which was seized by the rebels on Tuesday. "We are now going to Kinshasa. No one will divide this country."

Nearly 3,000 Congolese army soldiers and police defected to the rebels in Goma on Wednesday and turned in their weapons at the stadium rally.

Even as the rebels consolidated their gains, the presidents of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda called on them to give up the territory they now control.

The M23 is made up of hundreds of officers who deserted the Congo army in April this year. Neighboring Rwanda has supplied trained soldiers and weapons, according to a report by United Nations experts to be published Friday.

The speed with which the M23 has seized Goma and the surrounding countryside, rich in minerals, exposes the weakness of President Joseph Kabila's government, 1,500 kilometers (978 miles) to the west in Kinshasa, say experts.

"It's a setback for Kabila. He wasn't even capable of reforming the army and the fall of Goma demonstrated that," said Felix Bafilemba. "It marks the beginning of the end for Kabila's regime."

Strewn with bodies, burned out vehicles and abandoned tanks, the road between Goma and Sake showed evidence of Tuesday's fighting.

M23 soldiers in vehicles patrolled the streets of Sake, 27 kilometers (17 miles) south of Goma. As in Goma, most residents accepted the rebels' presence.

"We only want peace," said Innocent Rumabo in Sake.

Other resident complained of rapes carried out Tuesday night.

"I know two women who were raped, there are more in the area," said one Goma resident who insisted on anonymity for fear of retaliation.

In neighboring Uganda, the presidents of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo resolved to put pressure on the M23 rebels to give up territory they have captured, according to a statement released at the end of the emergency talks.

"Even if there are legitimate grievances by the mutineering group known as M23, they cannot accept the expansion of this war or entertain the idea of overthrowing the legitimate government of (Congo) or undermining its authority," said presidents Joseph Kabila of Congo, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, in a statement issued late Wednesday.

"Therefore the M23 must immediately stop this offensive and pull out of Goma," said the presidents' statement issued in Kampala. This resolution was to be immediately communicated to the M23 leadership, the statement said.

Kabila said he was willing to negotiate directly with the M23 rebels, a reversal from his previous refusal to talk with the rebels.

For his part, Kagame reiterated Rwanda's denial that it is supporting the rebels, saying each government "must bear the burden" of its own internal problems, according to a diplomat close to the talks, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the emergency summit.

Uganda, which was also implicated in the Congo violence by report of U.N. experts, denies supporting the rebels.

While the three presidents called on the M23 to give up the territory that they have seized, the rebels continued Wednesday on toward their next target: Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province on Lake Kivu.

The Congo soldiers remaining in the government army near Goma said they are not sure what to do.

"We are waiting for orders now. We don't know what we are supposed to do. It's hard. My comrades who defected in Goma, we're going to fight them," said a Congolese army major reached by phone in Kanyabayonga, northwest of Goma, where some of the troops have regrouped. The major required anonymity because of the uncertain situation.

The United Nations accuses the M23 of grave crimes including recruiting child soldiers, summary executions and rape, according to an experts report released Wednesday.

The United Nations peacekeepers, known by their acronym MONUSCO, did not help the Congo government forces during Tuesday's battle because they do not have a mandate to engage the rebels, said Congolese military spokesman Olivier Hamuli, who expressed frustration over the lack of action by the peacekeepers.

A U.N. spokesman in New York said that the nearly 1,500 U.N. peacekeepers in Goma held their fire to avoid triggering a battle. The peacekeepers "cannot substitute for the efforts of national forces" in Congo, said spokesman Eduardo del Buey.

On Wednesday the Security Council was expected to review the mandate of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo. A resolution adopted Tuesday by the Security Council asks the U.N. secretary-general to recommend possible redeployment, and possible "additional force multipliers."

The resolution approved unanimously by the council imposes targeted sanctions, including a travel ban and assets freeze on the M23 rebel group leadership. But it did not name two countries accused by Congo of supporting the rebels: Rwanda and Uganda.

The council demanded that the M23 rebels withdraw from Goma, disarm and disband, and insisted on the restoration of the crumbing Congolese government authority in the country's turbulent east.

The resolution also calls for an immediate end to external support to the rebels and asks the U.N. secretary-general to report on the allegations of foreign support while expressing its readiness to take appropriate measures.

Rwanda, and to a smaller extent by Uganda, are accused among other things of equipping the rebels with sophisticated arms, including night vision goggles and 120 mm mortars.

Attorney General Kilmartin Urges Congress to Extend Tax Relief for ...

November 21, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin has joined a national effort by state and territorial attorneys general to urge Congress to extend tax relief for consumers who have mortgage debt canceled or forgiven because of financial hardship or a decline in housing values.

Attorney General Kilmartin was one of 42 attorneys general to sign on to a letter to U.S. House and Senate leaders today, urging them to extend the tax relief, which will otherwise expire on December 31, 2012.

Such legislation is currently included in Section 112 of the Family and Business Tax Cut Certainty Act of 2012 (S3521), which was recently passed out of the Senate Finance Committee with bipartisan support.

The expiration comes at a time when many homeowners nationwide are benefiting from the $25 billion national settlement agreement with the nation?s five largest loan servicing companies. Attorney General Kilmartin announced on Monday that more than 1,000 Rhode Island homeowners had received financial relief, valued at more than $73 million, from the national mortgage settlement.

?I urge Congress to extend this critical tax exclusion so that the very families who least can afford it are not stuck with an unexpected tax bill at the end of the year,? said Attorney General Kilmartin. ?The mortgage modification and debt relief programs under the National Mortgage Settlement are providing real relief to homeowners fighting to keep their homes and trying to get back on their feet. Unless Congress acts, any progress made to right the housing market by the debt relief provided under the National Mortgage Settlement, as well as other mortgage debt relief programs, will likely be undone.

Under the federal Mortgage Debt Relief Act, in effect since 2007, mortgage debt that is forgiven after a foreclosure, short sale, or through a loan modification provided to a homeowner in a financial hardship may be excluded from a taxpayer?s calculation of taxable income. This exclusion only applies to mortgage debt forgiven on primary residences, not second homes.
