(AP) ? A new PGA Tour season began with a familiar name atop the leaderboard Friday at Kapalua.

Defending champion Jonathan Byrd ran off six straight birdies early in his round, then stalled on the back nine and settled for a 6-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead in the Tournament of Champions.

Byrd hasn't won since his playoff victory a year ago in the season opener. He felt a little uptight starting a new season, wanting to get off to a good start in breezy conditions on the Plantation Course.

But after two holes, he looked as comfortable as ever.

It must have felt as if last season never ended for Webb Simpson, a two-time winner who was second in the FedEx Cup and on the PGA Tour money list. Simpson played the last five holes on the front nine in 5-under par and shot 68 to match Steve Stricker, Michael Bradley and Martin Laird.

Thirteen players in the 27-man field of PGA Tour winners broke par in gorgeous conditions along the cliffs of Maui. It's the smallest field since this event moved to Kapalua, hurt by 11 players who didn't or couldn't make it to Maui, and by Lucas Glover having to withdraw Friday morning because of a sprained knee from a paddle board accident last Saturday.

Just like any new season, there was a degree of nervousness and uncertainty, starting with the defending champion.

"You're never sure what you're going to get the first round of the year," Byrd said.

It was nearly a repeat performance from last year, when Byrd started his season with five birdies on the front nine, the holing out a wedge on the 10th for eagle to get to 7 under early in his round before he settled into pars.

This time, the culprit was a bad swing on the ninth fairway when Byrd tried to hit driver off the deck to reach the par-5 green into the wind, and instead found a bunker from 60 yards away that led to a bogey.

He was even more disappointed at the end of the round, when he three-putted for par.

"You're leading the golf tournament and you walk off a hole embarrassed," Byrd said.

Laird had some bad feelings early with consecutive bogeys early in his round, but bounced back with a 33 on the back nine for his 68. Stricker, at No. 6 the highest-ranked American in the world, put his 5-iron into the gorge on the par-3 eighth for a double bogey, and then he rallied strong. He birdied four of his last five holes.

"I wasn't very happy at the time," Stricker said. "I knew if I could get a good, decent round in ? I was thinking get 3 under or something like that ? I'd be OK. But I got a couple more than that coming in."

PGA champion Keegan Bradley, the only major champion in the short field, holed out a wedge from short of the ninth green for eagle that sent him to a 69. Only six players broke 70 on what appeared to be relatively good scoring conditions.

The mountainous course was built for trade wind, and while it was breezy, it was not severe. But there are so many newcomers to Kapalua ? a dozen of the 27 players ? that it takes time to sort out the wind, the slope and the grain on the green.

Scott Piercy arrived on Christmas ? he has a vacation place in nearby Kaanapali ? and played the Plantation Course plenty of times to get ready for the new season.

"I saved all my worst shots for today," he said after rallying for a 70.

Gary Woodland drove into the native grass and had to take a penalty drop on the ninth hole. He had 224 yards, up the hill and into a strong wind, and thought he had to blast a 3-wood to have any hope of getting to the green. He blasted it, all right, over the green and into the bleachers, though he managed to escape with par.

Brendan Steele said he picked up on the nuances of golf courses fairly easily in his rookie season. This was unlike any of those courses, however.

"The wind, the grain, the slope ... you can look pretty silly," he said after a 76.

Byrd said he rarely plays well when he feels confident; he's better off feeling uneasy about his game, and that's about how he felt when he woke up Friday morning.

He chunked his opening tee shot and had to make a long two-putt for par, but his fortunes turned quickly. From about 120 yards into the wind on the third hole, he played an 8-iron back in his stance and played a low draw that spun close to the cup and settled about 5 feet away. That was the first of six straight birdies, and just like that, Byrd was back atop the leaderboard.

Google Earth updated, fixes issues with Tegra 2 devices

Google Earth

Google has updated the Google Earth app, fixing a pesky-as-hell bug that caused the app to crash during startup on Tegra 2 devices.  NVIDIA uses special instructions for the Tegra chip, and while they work amazingly well when used properly (check out some Tegra games if you haven't yet), sometimes different specialized hardware makes it difficult for the generic "works everywhere" app to use the full set of features.

That's probably what happened with the last update for Google Earth -- it certainly pushes the limit of what a mobile GPU can handle, and needed a bit of tweaking to run it all on the Tegra chips.  Call it fragmentation, call it legacy, but it's a fact of life that you have trade-offs between different hardware platforms.  Google seems to have it all sorted, and now we can have our imaginary getaways to exotic virtual locations on our Tegra based tablets and phones.  Hit the download link after the break or check the Market for your update.

Is the Xbox Live "Hacking" Problem Worse Than Microsoft Realises? [Xbox]

Is the Xbox Live "Hacking" Problem Worse Than Microsoft Realises? So late last year, people began to complain that their Xbox Live accounts were being "hacked". Microsoft said no, they weren't, but acknowledged there was an issue with unscrupulous types "phishing" for account info.

"It's not a hack, it's really just a different way to monetise stolen accounts", Microsoft's Doug Park said at the time.

Well, that was a few months back, and still, people are complaining that this is happening.

One such person, whose story makes for pretty grim reading, is 23 year-old Xbox Ambassador Susan Taylor, who claims that not only has her Xbox Live account been illegally accessed, but that when contacted about the problem Microsoft endlessly bounced her around customer support divisions then ultimately failed to lock her account, and as a result she's lost over $300 in purchases taken straight off her PayPal account, around half of it disappearing after Microsoft were supposed to have suspended her account for security purposes (see below).

The scam supposedly works like this: an Xbox Live account holder's login information is somehow obtained (how exactly this happens is unclear, and is why this has been bubbling along for a few months now). The "hacker" (or however they obtained the info) buys a Family Gold Pack, which lets the culprit gift Microsoft Points to nominated accounts. They then buy a ton of Microsoft Points, set up new Xbox Live Gold accounts and siphon the points into these new accounts. Finally, on the black market these loaded accounts are sold to customers for less than it would cost to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold and buy the points themselves.

Susan tells Kotaku that she has never played FIFA 12, the title which is most often thought to have been the cause behind the scam. She also tells us that her PayPal account and Xbox Live account did not share either a username or password (though they were obviously linked via her Xbox system).

Microsoft's inaction had a slight upside, though, as she also says the fact she could still log into her Xbox meant she could track down and message one of the people who received the stolen points.

That user claims he purchased the Xbox Live account from a Polish auction site, and hands over some of the details of the person they bought the account from so Susan could track them down.

What sucks here is that, if the story checks out, Microsoft's failure to lock her console down once notified of the breach resulted in Susan losing even more money. What sucks even more is that, three months after this mess first blew up, it's still happening, and that even though Microsoft claims this is not a "hack", users are still losing accounts and money and receiving very poor customer service in return.

To see how poor, check out Susan's full account at the link below.

We've also contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back.

Trial of ousted Egyptian president resumes

Former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, ousted in a popular revolt today faced prosecutors who would grill on charges of ordering of the killing of anti-regime protesters, abuse of office and corruption.

The prosecution is set to present its arguments in this session that is expected to last over three days.

The ailing former president Mubarak, 83, was wheeled in the courtroom on a stretcher and his sons Gamal and Alaa, also facing charges, were present. Egypt's former interior minister Habib al-Adly and six top police officers are also being tried together in a Cairo court.

Mubarak and his aides are charged with being complicit in the killing of over 800 protesters during a popular uprising last year that ousted his regime. If convicted, Mubarak could face the death penalty.

The accused also face corruption charges.

Mubarak's trial had resumed on Wednesday after a three-month hiatus that saw other major developments like fresh protests and clashes and an Islamists' election victory eclipse his trial.

Official TV and for the first time zoomed in on the helicopter and showed the stretcher waiting for the ousted president. Mubarak was shown carried out of the plane on a stretcher and being moved to the ambulance's stretcher.

The TV has earlier showed armoured vehicles transferring Alaa and Jamal, as well as el-Adli and his aides from prison to court.

The former minister of interior was seen smiling.

Mubarak, his sons, and former minister of the interior and his top aides are accused of inciting to kill protestors during January Revolution.

Microsoft-approved Windows Phone 7 unlocker discontinued (for the moment)

Well, that was fast. Not two months after ChevronWP7 began selling $9 "tokens" to unlock WP7 handsets, the tool is being discontinued. WPCentral reports that ChevronWP7 made an agreement with Microsoft not to sell more than 10,000 tokens. Unfortunately for latecomers, though, the outfit's reached that cut-off, and says it has no current plans to renegotiate this number (though it hasn't ruled it out either). In a statement, ChevronWP7 spokesperson Rafael Rivera wrote, "Microsoft isn't involved in our discussion yet. And they can't provide us with more unlocks because we haven't asked yet. If we do request more, we're sure Microsoft will respond positively - as they have in the past." Until the two companies raise that sales ceiling, the only Redmond-sanctioned unlocker will be Microsoft's own AppHub, which will set you back a princelier $99.
