New funding will benefit UCLA pediatric research in cancer ...

Los Angeles is home to Mattel Children?s Hospital, which provides state-of-the art care to children in Los Angeles and throughout the globe. It is also a world-renowned research facility for pediatric research. On May 30, the facility announced that it had received a generous donation of $348,000 from the Today's and Tomorrow's Children Fund (TTCF).

The funds are earmarked for research for projects currently underway by the UCLA Children?s Discovery and Innovation Institute (CDI): deadly pediatric brain tumors, pediatric epilepsy, and advanced genetic testing for the causes of autism and cancer in children.

?Not only does Mattel Children?s Hospital UCLA provide world-class patient care, but our faculty members are also in the CDI?s laboratories studying the causes of diseases that afflict our patients and searching for new treatments and cures,? noted Dr. Sherin Devaskar, professor of pediatrics, executive chair of the department of pediatrics, physician-in-chief at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. She added, ?However because of limited federal research dollars, we must rely on additional avenues for funding. TTCF is an innovative way for the community to embrace the work of our pediatric subspecialty physician researchers and actively participate in the exciting process of advancing science.?

The funds were allocated to several investigators. The grand prize of $140,000 was presented to Dr. Tom Belle Davidson, assistant professor of pediatric hematology/oncology, for her work in studying a potential therapy for one of the deadliest types of pediatric brain tumors called high-grade gliomas which have few treatment options and an overall five-year survival rate of only 10-30%. The study is focused on a vaccine created from immune system cells, known as dendritic cells (DC), taken from the patient's blood and treated with broken-down cells isolated from his or her tumor tissue during surgery. These stimulated DCs will then be injected back into the patient as a vaccine in order to teach the host immune system to identify the malignant brain tumor cells as ?foreign? to the body. Researchers hope the treatment will show improved outcomes with fewer toxic side effects than current standard therapies. In addition Dr. Davidson and her team will investigate the use of a topical compound cream on the vaccination site that stimulates the innate immune system and has been shown to display antiviral and antitumor activity.

Another beneficiary of the funding is Dr. Joyce Wu, associate professor of pediatric neurology. She received $118,000 to help advance her team?s research into pediatric epilepsy, including types of the diseases that do not respond to medication. The researchers have already discovered in children with epilepsy that ultra-fast brain electrical activity called high-frequency oscillations (HFO) are found throughout the brain and are a potential biological marker?or biomarker?to help assess, monitor and predict the condition. This finding has been seen without the use of invasive surgical implants inside patients? heads for days to weeks as part of their epilepsy surgery evaluation and was correlated to surgical removal of seizure-causing zones resulting in seizure freedom.

In addition, the funds will allow Dr. Wu and her team to expand on the concept of HFO. Two goals include correlating the presence of HFO in children who are at high-risk of developing epilepsy later in life due to an inadequate oxygen supply at birth, a traumatic brain injury or tuberous sclerosis complex?formation of tumors in the brain or other vital organs. Additionally, with the ability to interpret HFO ?live? in the operating room and immediately study affected brain tissue, this could potentially lead to a better understanding of the development of epilepsy and new antiepileptic drugs. The research holds promise for future clinical trials for better surgical brain mapping and potential disease-modifying therapy to prevent the development of epilepsy altogether, not merely stopping seizures with anticonvulsant medications.

An award of $90,000 was presented to Dr. Julian Martinez-Agosto, assistant professor of human genetics and pediatrics, for his research focused on the genetic risk factors of autism and cancer predisposition. Dr. Martinez-Agosto?s research focuses on genetic conditions in which children experience overgrowth: a situation in which their bodies grow faster than their peers. A subset of these children has autism. By using the latest technologies, they are able to identify the genetic changes in these children in order to expand their understanding of the causes of autism and, in some cases, a predisposition to cancer.

In addition, the funds will enable Dr. Martinez-Agosto and his team to use a new, efficient way to establish a personalized genetic-based diagnosis called ?next generation whole exome sequencing? to identify mutations in pediatric patients with overgrowth syndromes. This technology will allow them to examine each letter in the patient?s genes, sequencing DNA to identify rare mutations that are predicted to cause autism, overgrowth, and/or cancer predisposition. The findings are expected to enhance the understanding of the genetic risk factors for autism and the biology of pediatric growth disorders, as well as provide new potential targets for therapies.

The Today's and Tomorrow's Children Fund was founded in 2006 based on the belief that, by pooling their donations, a group of committed individuals could award an annual gift to support the research of talented pediatric faculty members at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. Each year, TTCF members vote on a ballot of select research projects and the three faculty members receiving the most votes present their research to the group, who then select the winning presentations. TTCF currently includes 67 members from the community and continues to grow each year. To date, the group has donated a total of $1.5 million to 13 researchers at UCLA. Ultimately, the group hopes to expand to 200 members in order to provide an annual award of $1 million.

HBT: Moyer, 49, designated for assignment by Rockies

We?ve had all kinds of fun with the story of the 49 year-old Jamie Moyer coming back from Tommy John surgery and actually landing a job in the major leagues. But now it seems that fun is over:

Sad jams.

Moyer made 10 starts for the Rockies and, overall, the results were poor. He was 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA and allowed a league-leading 75 hits in 53 and two-thirds innings while sporting a 1.733 WHIP.?For his career, Moyer is 269-209 with a 4.25 ERA in a staggering 25 seasons.

Though the end ? if this is the end ? is sad, there was never any reason to believe he?d even make it back after his Tommy John surgery. ?The story, in my view anyway, is still a happy one. One of?perseverance and determination,?even if he never pitches in the bigs again. TV movie stuff, here, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Here?s hoping he latches on someplace. Or, if he doesn?t, that he finds peace in retirement. A long delayed retirement that many pitchers with twice Moyer?s talent and physical gifts started a decade earlier than he will.

Then and Now: The Descent of Ethics in the Medical Field | Medical ...

I feel blessed to have grown up and become a nurse in the era of TV programs like?Marcus Welby, MD, Ben Casey,?and?Medical Center.?I couldn?t wait to be part of such a noble profession and I proudly recited the ?Florence Nightingale Pledge,? the nursing equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath, at my graduation from a Catholic nursing school in 1969.

Written in 1893 and named in honor of nurse/hero Florence Nightingale, the pledge reads:

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.1

Description: http://www.lifenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/physician2.jpgForty-three years later, I still subscribe to those simple but powerful principles but the healthcare world around me has changed dramatically. On the plus side, I have witnessed the great advances in treating illnesses, pain, etc. However, on the minus side, I have witnessed an increasing rejection of traditional ethics that has turned the world I knew upside-down in so many ways. In 1969, I could never have imagined that the crime of abortion would be declared a constitutional right or that euthanasia in the guise of ?physician assisted suicide? would become legal in any state. And could any of us ever have imagined a time when a US president would try to force even Catholic healthcare institutions into violating their conscience rights?

These changes did not happen overnight and neither were they the result of new scientific discoveries. The tragedy is that this all began with small, deliberate steps.

Contraception and Abortion

In 1965, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) redefined conception from the union of sperm and egg to ?the implantation of a fertilized ovum,?2?allowing hormones ? like those in the Pill ? that can interfere with implantation to be classified as contraceptive rather than potentially abortifacient. Eventually, this opened the door not only to widespread acceptance of artificial contraception but also later developments such as abortifacient ?morning after? pills, embryonic stem cell research, and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Unsurprisingly, abortion itself was legalized a mere eight years after the ACOG redefinition of conception when the stage was already set for a pervasive contraceptive mentality making childbearing merely a ?choice.? Now, we not only have abortion celebrated as a right but also infertile couples who want to adopt having to compete with same-sex couples for a smaller and smaller pool of available children to love and raise. Some desperate infertile couples resort to IVF, artificial insemination, or surrogate motherhood. Today, unborn babies themselves routinely have to pass ?quality control? prenatal tests to escape abortion. And just recently, two parents won almost $3 million in a ?wrongful birth? lawsuit because they claimed that they would have aborted their daughter with Down Syndrome if the prenatal tests had been accurate.3

Moreover, according to two ethicists writing in a recent article in the?Journal of Medical Ethics, even a newborn without disabilities does not necessarily have any right to live. Ethicists Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva baldly state that ?what we call ?after-birth abortion? (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled.? This, they argue, should be permissible because, like a fetus, the newborn is only a ?potential person.?4

Organ Donation

In 1968, an ad hoc committee at Harvard Medical School issued a report defining a type of irreversible coma as a new criterion for death,?stating that ?[t]he burden is great on patients who suffer permanent loss of intellect, on their families, on the hospitals, and on those in need of hospital beds already occupied by these comatose patients? and the ?[o]bsolete criteria for the definition of death can lead to controversy in obtaining organs for transplantation.?5

Since then, all 50 states have adopted laws adding brain death to the definition of death but each hospital can determine its own, often widely varying, criteria for what counts as brain death.

When brain death did not provide enough organ donations to transplant, some ethicists and doctors devised a new way of obtaining organs. Now, we have non-heart-beating organ donation (aka donation after cardiac death) for people who do not meet the brain death definition6?and doctors like Robert Truog, who argues that the traditional ?dead donor rule? before organ transplantation should be eliminated in favor of?taking organs from living patients on life support with ?valid consent for both withdrawing treatment and organ donation.?7

In a final step, doctors in Belgium have already combined euthanasia with organ donation.8?Could this happen here? Just last year, the?New York Times?published an article from a death row inmate in Oregon arguing for the right to donate his organs after his own capital punishment by lethal injection, and started an organization promoting this for other prisoners.9

The ?Right To Die? and Euthanasia

The 1970s brought the invention of ?living wills? and the?Euthanasia Society of America changed its name to the Society for the Right to Die. The so-called ?right to die? movement received a real boost when the parents of Karen Quinlan, a 21-year-old woman considered ?vegetative? after a probable drug overdose, ?won? the right to remove her ventilator with the support of many prominent Catholic theologians. Karen continued to live 10 more years with a feeding tube, much to the surprise and dismay of some ethicists. Shortly after the Quinlan case, California passed the first ?living will? law.

Originally, ?living wills? only covered refusal of life-sustaining treatment for imminently dying people. There was some suspicion about this allegedly innocuous document and, here in Missouri, ?living will? legislation only passed when ?right to die? advocates agreed to a provision exempting food and water from the kinds of treatment to be refused.

But, it wasn?t long before the parents of Missouri?s Nancy Cruzan, who was also said to be in a ?vegetative? state, ?won? the right to withdraw her feeding tube despite her not being terminally ill or even having a ?living will.? The case was appealed to the US Supreme Court, which upheld Missouri law requiring ?clear and convincing evidence? that Nancy Cruzan would want her feeding tube removed, but, in the end, a local judge allowed the feeding tube to be removed. Shortly after Nancy?s slow death from dehydration, Senators John Danforth and Patrick Moynihan proposed the Patient Self-Determination Act (never voted upon but became law under budget reconciliation), which required all institutions to offer all patients information on ?living wills? and other advance directives. Since then, such directives evolved to include not only the so-called ?vegetative? state and feeding tubes but virtually any other condition a person specifies as worse than death and any medical care considered life-sustaining when that person is deemed unable to communicate.

But has this choice become an illusion? The last several years have also seen the rise of so-called futility policies and even futility laws in Texas that can override patient or family decisions to continue treatment on the basis that doctors and/or ethicists know best.

?

In the early 1990s, Jack Kevorkian went public with his first assisted suicide and the ?right to die? debate took yet another direction. By the end of the decade, Oregon became the first state to allow physician-assisted suicide. At first, the law was portrayed as necessary for terminally ill people with allegedly unrelievable pain. Within a short time, though, it was reported that ?according to their physicians, the patients requested assistance with suicide because of concern about loss of autonomy and control of bodily functions, not because of concern about inadequate control of pain or financial loss.?10

In 2008, Washington became the next state to legalize assisted suicide and in 2009, Montana?s state Supreme Court declared that it was not against public policy for a doctor to assist the suicide of a competent terminally ill person. Relentless efforts to legalize assisted suicide in other states have failed so far, but many euthanasia proponents support terminal sedation as a stopgap alternative to assisted suicide for the present.11?Ominously, just last year assisted suicide activist and terminal sedation advocate Dr. Timothy Quill was named president-elect of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).

In just the last few months,?popular health expert Dr. Mehmet Oz voiced his support for physician-assisted suicide on his TV show and Dr. Phil McGraw hosted a segment on his widely seen TV show featuring a Canadian woman who wanted her adult disabled children to die by lethal injection. Ironically, the mother, along with former Kevorkian lawyer Geoffrey Feiger, argued that removing their feeding tubes was an ?inhumane? way to end the lives of the adult children. Tragically, when the studio audience was polled, 90% were in favor of lethal injections for the disabled adults.

The Challenge Ahead

After 43 years, I don?t miss the starched nursing uniforms and glass IV bottles of my youth but I certainly do miss the idealism and ethical unity that I shared with my colleagues during that time.

Back then, Catholic nursing education like mine added a level of ministry to our efforts but, Catholic or not, we all shared the common goal of providing the very best health care for every patient regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or condition.

But now, in capitulation to the new ideal of ?choice,? we doctors and nurses find ourselves ostracized from our professional organizations for being ?politically incorrect? when we oppose abortion and stand up for discrimination-free medical care for the disabled. We are warned not be ?judgmental? when a terminally ill person asks to die. At the same time, we see our conscience rights being legally dismantled with excuses such as ?Doctors, nurses and pharmacists choose professions that put patients? rights first. If they foresee that priority becoming problematic for them, they should choose another profession.?12

This did not happen overnight but rather by small and ever deepening steps. The result has not been a more compassionate and just society but rather a culture with a false sense of power and entitlement. We have been seduced into believing not only that we deserve control over having or not having children but also the degree of perfection of those chosen children. We think we deserve a life in which the seriously ill or disabled don?t financially or emotionally burden us. We think we deserve to decide when our own lives are not worth living, and have a right to be painlessly dispatched by a medical person. And we desperately but ultimately futilely want to believe that our actions and attitudes will not have terrible consequences.

It will take all of us openly and constantly challenging this culture of death to restore the traditional respect for life that protects all our lives.

Tom Barrett Campaign Flooded With Calls After Spam Text Messages Label Mayor 'Union Puppet'

WASHINGTON -- The phones at Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's (D) gubernatorial campaign headquarters were clogged all day Tuesday after an unsolicited text message went out to cell phones accusing Barrett of being a "union puppet" and telling Wisconsinites to call his office and complain.

The message, from "WI@obamasaliar.com," read: "Tom Barrett is a Union Puppet who will give Union Thugs everything they want. Call & ask why 414-271-8050." The number goes to Barrett's office.

View an image of the message, passed along to The Huffington Post by a Wisconsin source:

Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak said the calls began Tuesday morning. The phones in the office were operational, but "clogged" during the day. The calls continued into Tuesday evening. Walzak blamed the campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and his allies.

"We know that someone is playing a dirty trick on Tom Barrett. It has to be either Gov. Walker or an ally of Gov. Walker who is behind this," "Walzak said. "The sole purpose is to disrupt this office's operations. ... We have been able to complete our tasks and continue moving our ball down the field with no problem, despite this attempt at a disruption."

Ciara Matthews, spokeswoman for Walker's campaign, called Walzak's accusation "ridiculous." She said the first the governor's campaign heard of the text message was from the media. The campaign also started receiving random calls -- from Wisconsinites who believed the Walker campaign was behind the texts and wanted to complain or compliment.

"Once again, Tom Barrett and his campaign, with absolutely no evidence to back up their claim, is making an outrageous accusation of Gov. Walker and his campaign," said Matthews. "This is a complete figment of their imagination. Our campaign had absolutely nothing to do with these text messages. We don't know where they came from, or who is behind them. This is becoming habitual for the Barrett campaign. Something happens that they don't like, and they just make an accusation out of the blue."

Daniel Bice of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that one woman who received the message said that all the members of her family who have Sprint phone service received the text.

Walzak told The Huffington Post that the campaign heard from a significant number of Democrats and Barrett supporters who received the message and were "fired up even more as a result of these dirty tricks."

Scott Goodstein was the external online director for Obama for America and is founder of Revolution Messaging, a progressive strategy firm that has been working to expose text-message spamming in political campaigns. His group is running a petition opposing the tactic.

"Each year we see technology used to encourage people to get out the vote," he said. "Sadly these innovations end up in the hands of evil when the stakes are high. What we started during the Obama '08 campaign, to use opted-in text messaging to increase voter participation, has quickly been sabotaged by the right-wingers that conduct voter suppression through the very same mobile gateway. These spam text messages should be stopped and we need the public to speak out against this spam tactic. This is no different than auto-calls being used in the early 90s to increase turnout. ... These spam text messages are even worse -- because not only are they annoying and misleading, they actually cost consumers money to receive the SMS."

Voters go to the polls on June 5 for the recall election.

Speak with a Bankruptcy Attorney about Your Movie Star Lifestyle

In today's society, many Americans try to emulate the lives of famous movie stars. The difference between them and us is, they make billions of dollars and we owed millions of dollars. Well, maybe not quite millions, but it seems like it. Most women watch the awards shows to see what famous movie stars are wearing and go out to their local department store and attempt to find something close to it. It's crazy when you see a house cleaner carrying a designer bag and wearing designer sunglasses. Either someone is in debt, stealing from their clients or is not paying their rent. All of this does not add up, but starts to make sense after the consumer debt ratio numbers came out at the end of 2011. The average American has about $16,000 in credit card debt, totaling close to $800 billion nationwide. What's funny is, no one in the government seems to think this is a problem.

Wait a minute, I guess it's pretty hard to throw stones when you're living in a glass house. This problem of debt runs from the top all the way down to the bottom. It's no surprise that the numbers of those filing bankruptcy continue to rise.

Many Americans need a wake-up call and should consult a bankruptcy attorney before it's too late. Let's face it, people who live in the United States are addicted to credit. Back in the 80s it was crack and now the new drug is credit card debt. Why wait for anything when you can have it now. Americans are now at a breaking point in their personal lives and even in the government where they are robbing Peter to pay Paul. Just because you can make the interest payment, doesn't mean you shouldn't be filing bankruptcy. Wiping the slate clean can be very freeing and after a few months of living debt-free and credit card free, the bondage is broken. Living with the motto of keeping up with the Joneses only leads to the feelings of emptiness and will never fill your heart with what you need. It's time that people face the music and contact a bankruptcy attorney to see if they are a candidate to break the chains. Filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy is probably the fastest and most powerful way to eliminate a large amount of unsecured debt. It does come with its downside and that's a scarlet B. on one's credit report. If someone would only consider how much of the debt they are carrying will never be paid off and will only stay open if they can make the minimum payment and kick the can down the road. Eventually, their credit will go south anyways just as a snowball grows as its rolling down the hill, so does one's debt when making minimum payments.

Motorcycle fatalities stay steady while auto deaths decline

crashed motorcycle

The numbers haven't been definitively crunched, but it is expected that the estimated 32,310 traffic fatalities in 2011 were the lowest on record in the 62 years that records have been kept. Yet the good news about the total number of fatalities masks regrettable news for traffic safety authorities: automobile fatalities are down, but motorcycle fatalities are up.

After a steady rise in motorcyclist death rates through the first decade of the new century, numbers fell in 2009 and the beginning of 2010. Observers hoped the trend would continue, but that didn't happen when deaths ticked up slightly over the course of 2010 and stayed steady through 2011.

Causes are varied, from high gas prices leading more people to ride motorcycles to inadequate training for both riders and automobile drivers on how to ply the roads safely. A report breaking down the numbers also "noted that 29 percent of fatally injured riders in 2010 had a blood-alcohol concentration at or above the legal limit, and 35 percent of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding." It didn't, however, indicate how much of those numbers overlapped ? how many of those riders were over the limit when they died.

Nor does it look like current developments will allay the trend in the near-term. Only 19 states require riders to wear helmets, Michigan just repealed its compulsory helmet law and five other states are considering such measures. Again, the overall number of fatalities is welcome news considering how many more people and cars there are on the roads now compared to 1949, but the takeaway for motorcyclists is that there is now more reason to be extra careful when you ride.

A look at each of the 16 teams at Euro 2012

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:10 a.m. ET May 25, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -A brief look at each of the 16 teams at this year's European Championship:

Group A(equals)

Poland(equals)

Playing at home will give Poland a huge boost, but it could still be tough to make it out of the first round. With the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal as possible quarterfinal opponents from Group B, the host nation is unlikely to make it into the semifinals.

Greece(equals)

The Euro 2004 champions were drawn in a relatively easy group and have an excellent record under coach Fernando Santos (7-3-0 in qualifying), but getting through the first round of a major tournament still isn't easy. Since their victory over Portugal eight years ago, the Greeks failed to get out of the group stage at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Russia(equals)

The Russians excelled at the last European Championship, but despite winning their qualifying group last year they are not expected to be among the contenders in Poland and Ukraine. But with Andrei Arshavin and Pavel Pogrebnyak up front, they should be scoring plenty of goals.

Czech Republic(equals)

The Czechs needed to go through the playoffs to reach Euro 2012. Heading into the final tournament, the 1976 champions are the lowest ranked team of the 14 qualifiers at No. 29. Only co-hosts Poland and Ukraine, who qualified automatically, are ranked lower.

---

Group B(equals)

Netherlands(equals)

The World Cup runners-up were put into the toughest group, but they should still be able to make it into the quarterfinals with Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder all threats up front. The team's final match against Portugal is likely to be decisive.

Denmark(equals)

The Danes are the lowest ranked team in the group, and the biggest outsiders. The 1992 champions will likely need all the other teams to beat each other for them to sneak through.

Germany(equals)

Germany reached the final at Euro 2008 and the semifinals at the World Cup two years later, and they should be getting better. Bastian Schweinsteiger has become the heart of the team, but Thomas Mueller, Mario Gomez and Mesut Oezil are the ones most likely to provide the goals.

Portugal(equals)

Cristiano Ronaldo will have another chance to shine on the big stage, and he will have to carry Portugal if the Euro 2004 finalists want to make it into the quarterfinals. Among the top players in the world, Ronaldo has so far failed to play his best when wearing a Portugal shirt.

---

Group C(equals)

Spain(equals)

The defending champions from Spain are many people's favorite to win another major title. The Spanish finally ended their 44-year drought at major tournaments when they beat Germany in the Euro 2008 final in Vienna, and then followed that up by winning their first World Cup trophy two years ago in Johannesburg. With Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta controlling play, they are a good bet to make it three in a row.

Italy(equals)

The Italians have been on the decline since winning their fourth World Cup title in 2006, and despite winning their qualifying group they are not expected to challenge for the Euro 2012 championship. But if Mario Balotelli makes the team and can showcase his skill, Italy could mount a championship run.

Ireland(equals)

After the disappointment of missing out on the last World Cup because of a handball against France, the Irish made it through to their second European Championship. Coached by Italian veteran Giovanni Trapattoni, the Irish have a team made up mostly of English Premier League players.

Croatia(equals)

The Croats have struggled since qualifying for Euro 2008, missing out on the last World Cup. But they finished second in their qualifying group and beat Euro 2008 semifinalist Turkey in a playoff. To make it through the first round in Poland and Ukraine, the Croats will likely need to beat Italy.

---

Group D(equals)

Ukraine(equals)

Ukraine has never before played at the European Championship, missing out on all four tournaments since it split from the Soviet Union. But as usual, home advantage should give the co-hosts a boost in what is likely to be a tough group.

Sweden(equals)

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the field, the Swedes should not be counted out. The AC Milan striker can score some amazing goals, but he'll have to get through the French and English defenses if Sweden is to have a hope of making a run at the title.

France(equals)

After infighting derailed their chances at the 2010 World Cup, France coach Laurent Blanc seems to have the team back on track. A two-time European champion, the French will be tough to stop with hard-running Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri in the attack.

England(equals)

The English will again be looking to win their first European Championship, but they will arrive with an aging defense, a new coach and a suspended Wayne Rooney (for the first two matches). If the English don't win the group but still advance, a possible quarterfinal match against Spain could be the end.

London's Best Vegetarian Restaurants | Londonist

Mildred's restaurant. From Londonist Flickr Pool

London offers some of the best vegetarian food available. The capital?s veggie restaurants and caf?s?vary from offering light bites and food on the go to fine dining. They take their influences from the UK, the Mediterranean and of course South India amongst many other cuisines.

Many vegetarian places are hugely popular with veggies and non-veggies alike. As we draw to the end of national Vegetarian Week, we choose our own favourite restaurants.

Please leave your comments and let us know your favourites and we?ll add them as we go along.

Mildred?s
Mildred?s is one of the busiest and most popular vegetarian restaurants in London. Offering a diverse range of fresh and exiting food from Sri-Lankan to Mediterranean dishes and veggie burgers, it has become one of the most vibrant eateries in Soho, if not London.

Starters come in at around ?6 with mains costing between ?7 and ?11. For the quality of food, this is incredible value. Mildred?s don?t take table bookings, so you have to turn up on spec. This can mean a bit of a wait but with a great selection of drinks available and the promise of some fine food to come, its not too much of a hassle! The one room you can book is the upstairs private dining room, which has a collection of vintage porn on the walls.

Midlred?s is at 45 Lexington Street, London, W1F 9AN. Our review.

Vanilla Black
Vanilla Black takes inventive vegetarian cooking to the highest level. This Michelin recommended restaurant originally opened in York before moving to its current location in the heart of the city. Since then it has delighted restaurant goers with its funky, modern take on vegetarian fine dining.

The mouth watering culinary creations on offer include such delights as ?fried mushroom mousse and pernod pancakes with whipped cider, fennel and butternut squash?.

A great location for a treat or a celebratory meal. The set menus help to provide a more affordable option. Lunch is available at ?18.50 for two course or ?23.50 for three.

Vanilla Black is at 17-18 Tooks Court, London, EC4A 1LB. Our review.

The Gate
Hammersmith?s The Gate?has been a favourite with vegetarians since opening in 1989. Run by the brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, the food is a fusion of Asian flavours mixed with Mediterranean influences. Starters cost around ?6 with mains varying from ?10 to ?15.

The restaurant also periodically offers cookery workshops and the chefs have published two recipe books. Due to the ongoing success of the place, the brothers are opening a second restaurant in Islington on 1 June.

The Gate Hammersmith is at 51 Queen Caroline Street London, W6 9QL. Our review.

Food for Thought
Covent Garden?s Food for Thought?is a well priced, friendly caf? that is a great option for a quick bite while out shopping. The menu changes regularly but often includes bean stews, quiches, burritos and much more. You can get a fantastic main with a plate stacked full of salads and sides for between ?5 and ?8.

As the caf? is quite small and gets pretty busy. It can be a good idea to go either a bit before or after the lunchtime rush.

Food for Thought is at 31 Neal Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9PR

Vitao
Serving up a buffet of wholesome salads, bean- and pulse-based concoctions and much else besides, this friendly and inviting vegan caf? has become a favourite among London?s vegetarians, and visitors to Soho alike.

All the food on offer is organic, wholesome and well priced. All you can eat costs between ?6 and ?9 depending on the time of day.

Vitao is at 74 Wardour Street, London, W1F 0TE.

The Bonnington Caf?
The Bonnington Caf??is a community caf? run by a collective of volunteer chefs. The menu rotates with the cooks and there are normally a couple of different options available.

It started life as a squat caf? during the 1980s and has been a fixture of the community ever since. Starters and desserts cost ?3 with mains coming in at ?7. The Bonnington is a quirky, friendly and fun place to have a meal. It?s also good to support a local community enterprise that?s run on a not for profit basis.

The Bonnington Caf? is at 11 Vauxhall Grove, SW8 1TD. Our review.

Sagar
With restaurants in Hammersmith, the West End and Covent Garden, Sagar offers some of the best-value vegetarian Indian food available in London.?The menu is based on dishes from south India and offers incredible value with selection plates and Thalis available at lunchtime for around ?5. They also serve these?preposterously?large crispy roll things.

Sagar Hammersmith is at 157 King Street, London, W6 9JT
Sagar West End is at 17A Percy Street off Tottenham Court Road, London, W1T 1DU
Sagar Covent Garden is at 31 Catherine Street, London, WC2B 5JS

Manna
Primrose Hill?s Manna has been nominated as the best vegetarian restaurant in London during this vegetarian week. Its an accolade that is much deserved.

Manna offers modern, stylish and inventive vegetarian food that takes in a huge range of influences. With dishes varying from organic bangers and mash to burritos, Indian dishes and tofu based concoctions, there is something for everyone here. Starters are approximately ?8 with mains coming in around ?14. Truly exciting veggie food.

Manna is at 4 Erskine Road Primrose Hill, London NW3 3AJ

Tibits
Situated in Piccadilly, Tibits is one of the capital?s best vegetarian and vegan buffets. Offering eat-in and take-away options, Tibits serves up a diverse selection of enticing fresh flavours with dishes taking in salads, African cuisine, Asian influences and much more.

With all this on offer alongside a well stocked bar, Tibits is a great place to drop into if you?re out in central London.

Tibits is at 12-14 Hendon Street, London, W1B 4DA

Topics: Self Help Information That's Great To Know

Personal development is all about making positive changes in yourself so that you can have a better life. You will have to research and learn more about what you need to do to achieve your goals, but if stay motivated and put enough efforts into personal development, you will be rewarded. There are some great ideas for personal development in the article below.

Selfless behavior is a big leap forward in your personal development. You can benefit greatly by just making some simple sacrifices and helping others. If you can see the emotional benefits of helping others, then you are already well on your way to becoming a person you can be proud of.

Don't allow buying sprees to become an emotional release. Taking up a hobby is a better alternative. Do so and you will avoid cluttering up your life with needless possessions; even better, you will save yourself a great deal of money.

Place your personal central principles into practice. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. If you stay on top of your morals you will have a boost in self esteem and you will have a good base to defend them. If your goals are grounded by your principles, you'll be more consistent in pursuing them.

Try to get more organized. When you are organized, you will improve your confidence and feel accomplished in many different areas of your life. Your stress level will also diminish as your life becomes more orderly. There is something very calming about knowing that everything is in its place.

Make a real effort to stop worrying. Worrying unnecessarily will only create worst-case scenarios in your mind. Instead of worrying, think about the worst thing that could happen, and prevent it. Then, you are prepared to handle whatever gets thrown your way. Excessive worrying solves nothing.

Never force yourself to work beyond your physical limitations as you pursue your goals. Doing your best is essential, but you also need to know what your best is and not go past it. Caring for yourself is important when you are striving towards a desired end. If you were to sacrifice your body in pursuit of improving yourself, it would be counter-productive to your needs.

Personal development begins when you identify what you value the most. Setting high standards for yourself can help you achieve personal development you desire.

When building a personal development plan, it is important to consider your personal values. It's counterproductive to focus on things that you don't value. Instead, work on aspects of your life you want to improve that mesh well with your individual beliefs. This will help you make significant changes to your life, both at home and at work.

It is normal to find unhealthy foods tempting. Stress can harm your body, and life is too short to worry about every little thing.

Ignore social status and instrumental gain and treat everyone equally, unless they have actually done something to earn your scorn. Your demeanor towards them speaks a great deal about you, and nothing about them.

You may experience excess stress when you overreact to difficult situations. Analyze your situation with care and manage stress. Even if it's a mistake, you can always live through it or fix it. Successful people know that learning from your mistakes, and not simply the fact that you've made mistakes, is the key.

Maximize work time. Take an ample amount of breaks when you are working hard. This might sound counterproductive, but breaks allow you to refocus and re-energize, allowing you to return and work more efficiently.

Instead of bragging about your accomplishments, ask those around you about what they are most proud of and what they've achieved. This helps you discover what other people have accomplished to help you respect them which in turn betters your character.

See what obstacles are keeping you from success. This seems to be hard from some people. You might not be able to find your weakness, but you can find the way to change them. If you are successful in moving obstacles out of your way, you may find that your life's path is easier to navigate.

Your body's health affects your mind's health. Develop a regular fitness routine and follow a nutritious, satisfying diet plan. If you want a healthy mind, make sure it resides in a healthy body.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving personal development. Set a clear, well-defined goal for yourself. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

To improve your personal development, make sure that you are always using love to fuel whatever faith you believe in. Faith and love are intertwined. Do not stop doing things to strengthen your and faith. Put your faith into action through caring for those in need. This makes your faith real, and brings love to you and those around you.

You must determine what you would like to achieve in your life. Once you've done this, get out there and do it. Sitting and thinking about the life you want will not get you that life. If you take action and start working toward achieving your dreams, you can change your life for the better.

Understand that growth through personal development involves widening your knowledge base. It is also important to apply this knowledge. Self-improvement can be achieved in a vast number of ways. You will begin to feel more confidence when you apply these suggestions to your life.

IT Exam Certification Boot Camps Classes Blog: Veterans ...

What is an Accelerated Payment?

An accelerated payment is a lump sum payment of 60% of the tuition and fees for certain high cost, high tech programs. The Veterans Administration will make accelerated payments for one term, quarter, or semester at a time. However, if the program is not offered on a term, quarter or semester basis, the accelerated payment is paid for the entire program. To qualify, you must certify that you intend to seek employment in a high tech industry as defined by the VA. Accelerated payment is paid instead of regular Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30) benefits that you would otherwise receive.

Can I receive accelerated payments for computer training and certification courses?

Yes, as long as the courses have been approved for Veteran Administration benefits.

How much might the VA pay for a computer certification course?

To determine the exact amount of your benefits you must call the Veterans Administration at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) to speak with a Veterans Benefits Counselor.

The Veterans Administration pays for 60% of tuition and fees and 100% for certification tests under the Accelerated Payment plan.

Who qualifies for accelerated payments?

Only individuals eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30) qualify for accelerated payments.

What programs qualify for accelerated payment?

Both degree and non-degree programs qualify. You must be enrolled in a program in one of the following categories:

  • Life Science or physical science (but not social science)
  • Engineering (all fields)
  • Mathematics
  • Engineering and science technology
  • Computer specialties
  • Engineering, science and computer management

What industries qualify for accelerated payments?

You must intend to seek employment in one of the following industries:

  • Biotechnology
  • Life Science Technologies
  • Opto-Electronics
  • Computers and Telecommunications
  • Electronics
  • Computer-integrated manufacturing
  • Material Design
  • Aerospace
  • Weapons
  • Nuclear Technology
  • Any other identified advanced technologies in the biennial Science and Engineering Indicators report published by the National Science Foundation

How do I apply for accelerated payments?

Ask your school to include you request for accelerated payment to the Veterans Administration when it sends your enrollment information to VA for processing. Your request must include your certification that you plan to seek employment in the a high technology industry.

How is my education entitlement charged for accelerated payment?

The Veterans Administration will divide your accelerated payment by the amount of your full-time monthly rate (including kickers and additional contributions) and will reduce your entitlement by the resulting number of months and days. If you do not have sufficient entitlement to cover 60% of tuition and fees, the VA will pay you based on your actual remaining entitlement.

When can accelerated payments be made?

Accelerated payments may only be made for terms or other enrollment periods that begin on or after October 1, 2002.

Can school related expenses (such as books, supplies, and living expenses) be counted as tuition and fees for accelerated payments?

No. Only the school's tuition and fees can be considered for accelerated payment.

Exotic particles, chilled and trapped, form giant matter wave

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Physicists have trapped and cooled exotic particles called excitons so effectively that they condensed and cohered to form a giant matter wave.

This feat will allow scientists to better study the physical properties of excitons, which exist only fleetingly yet offer promising applications as diverse as efficient harvesting of solar energy and ultrafast computing.

"The realization of the exciton condensate in a trap opens the opportunity to study this interesting state. Traps allow control of the condensate, providing a new way to study fundamental properties of light and matter," said Leonid Butov, professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. A paper reporting his team's success was recently published in the scientific journal Nano Letters.

Excitons are composite particles made up of an electron and a "hole" left by a missing electron in a semiconductor. Created by light, these coupled pairs exist in nature. The formation and dynamics of excitons play a critical role in photosynthesis, for example.

Like other matter, excitons have a dual nature of both particle and wave, in a quantum mechanical view. The waves are usually unsynchronized, but when particles are cooled enough to condense, their waves synchronize and combine to form a giant matter wave, a state that others have observed for atoms.

Scientists can easily create excitons by shining light on a semiconductor, but in order for the excitons to condense they must be chilled before they recombine.

The key to the team's success was to separate the electrons far enough from their holes so that excitons could last long enough for the scientists to cool them into a condensate. They accomplished this by creating structures called "coupled quantum wells" that separate electrons from holes in different layers of alloys made of gallium, arsenic and aluminum.

Then they set an electrostatic trap made by a diamond-shaped electrode and chilled their special semiconducting material in an optical dilution refrigerator to as cold as 50 milli-Kelvin, just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

A laser focused on the surface of the material created excitons, which began to accumulate at the bottom of the trap as they cooled. Below 1 Kelvin, the entire cloud of excitons cohered to form a single matter wave, a signature of a state called a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Other scientists have seen whole atoms do this when confined in a trap and cooled, but this is the first time that scientists have seen subatomic particles form coherent matter waves in a trap.

Varying the size and depth of the trap will alter the coherent exciton state, providing this team, and others, the opportunity to study the properties of light and mater in a new way.

This most recent discovery stems from an ongoing collaboration between Leonid Butov's research group in UC San Diego's Division of Physical Sciences, including Alexander High, Jason Leonard and Mikas Remeika, and Micah Hanson and Arthur Gossard in UC Santa Barbara's Materials Department. The Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation funded the experiments, and the Department of Energy supported the development of spectroscopy in the optical dilution refrigerator, the technique used to observe the exciton condensate in a trap.
