Stock futures pare gains to trade flat after McDonald's earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures pared gains to trade flat on Monday, pressured by a decline in McDonald's shares after its results and as investors booked profits after the S&P 500 index hit yet another closing high on Friday.

McDonald's Corp (MCD) earnings came in a busy week of reports, with about one-third of S&P 500 companies due to report, including Apple (AAPL.O) and entertainment provider Netflix Inc (NFLX).

McDonald's Corp reported a 4 percent rise in quarterly profit, while global sales at established restaurants were in line with analysts' expectations. Shares fell 2 percent to $97.75 in premarket trade.

U.S.-listed shares of UBS (UBS.N) (UBSN.VX) rose 3.3 percent in premarket trade after the Swiss bank said its second-quarter profit beat forecasts despite a $920 million charge to settle a U.S. lawsuit and other matters.

The S&P 500 index (^GSPC) on Friday edged up to end at a second straight record high, while the Dow and Nasdaq stock gauges fell as disappointing earnings results from Microsoft and Google dragged on the market. Stronger-than-expected results from General Electric Co (GE.N) and oilfield services company Schlumberger NV (SLB.N) helped the S&P 500 to offset the tech losses and post a fourth week of gains.

"Considering the rally we've had recently, we are probably likely to move sideways or consolidate gains for a day or two, before moving up higher as earnings season intensifies. Nevertheless, the summer rally continues," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

In economic news, June existing-home sales data is due at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT). For home sales, a Reuters survey of economists expect a reading of an annualized 5.25 million units, compared with a prior reading of 5.18 million.

Kimberly-Clark Corp (KMB.N), best known for its Kleenex tissues, posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Monday, as cost savings helped offset the negative impact of foreign exchange rates.

Halliburton Co (HAL), the world's second-largest oilfield services company, posted higher-than-expected quarterly profit as it made more headway outside its home U.S. market. The stock was up 0.4 percent in premarket trade.

Analysts' estimates for corporate earnings have been reduced so much that investors believe the targets for the most part should be easily beaten.

Through Friday, of the 104 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings for the quarter, 65.4 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations, while 51 percent have topped revenue estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data.

S&P 500 futures fell 0.4 point and were in line with fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 8 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 5 points.

In Europe, shares were broadly unchanged by midday trade as mixed company earnings halted the index's march back towards five-year highs.

All the Gold on Earth Comes From Massive Space Explosions

Previously, astronomers had been under the impression that the heavy elements?gold, platinum, lead, uranium, etc.?came from supernova explosions. But now, scientists have announced a new theory for these highly valuable elements, this one involving two ultra-dense neutron stars and one spectacularly violent, grossly expensive collision.

5 Stars: A Mosquito's Idea Of A Delicious Human

Many criteria ? from blood type to body temperature ? can play a role in affecting who attracts mosquitoes.

If mosquitoes used Yelp, they might look for their next meal by searching nearby for a heavy-breathing human with Type O blood, sporting a red shirt and more than a smattering of skin bacteria. Preferably either pregnant or holding a beer.

That's some of what we take away from a post today on the Surprising Science blog from the Smithsonian.

The post gives reasons behind some of those preferences, such as mosquitoes' reliance on sensing carbon dioxide to find their next target and a preference for people with higher body heat. But it also adds that if you're a blood-sucker's favorite target, it could simply be a matter of genetics.

As The Two-Way has reported, in 2011 Dutch researchers found "that mosquitoes were more attracted to men with a 'higher abundance but lower diversity of bacteria on their skin,' " and were less attracted to people "with more diverse skin microbiota."

And in May, NPR's Shots blog reported on research finding that mosquitoes "are more attracted to human odors when they're infected with the malaria parasite."

If you're wondering why raindrops don't kill mosquitoes, you can check out a story from last summer by NPR's Richard Harris, who reported:

"Imagine how tough life would be if raindrops weighed 3 tons apiece as they fell out of the sky at 20 mph. That's how raindrops look to a mosquito, yet a raindrop weighing 50 times more than one can hit the insect and the mosquito will survive."

The meaning of credit | Your Personal Financial Mentor

CreditYour Personal Financial Mentor informs that in finance, the basic definition of credit revolves around mutual trust. Credit is defined as the trust which allows one person or party to give another party some goods or services of value, with a promise of payment at a later date. Essentially, this definition means that credit is actually debt, which is quite true. Modern finance has changed this outlook a little. Nowadays credit more or less can be defined as a person?s worth. In simple terms, when your credit is good, it means you are worth some good money and you can carry on with your life comfortably. When you have financial issues then we say your credit is bad. Well, what this actually means is that you are broke.

Accountants view credits as an entity that either increases the liabilities of a company or decreases the assets. For example if a payment is due to be made to the company by a debtor, then this is entered on the balance sheet as a credit. Therefore, on a company?s balance sheet, a credit is supposed to increase the net income of the company, while a debit will reduce the income. But this is only within the period that is covered by the balance sheet.

But many of us are familiar with the term credit from a totally different perspective. For a majority of people, the word credit is usually associated with a credit card. From this perspective, credit refers to the amount of money that is available to be borrowed from your financial institution, knowing that this money is expected to be paid back within a given period. Whenever you use your credit card for shopping, fuel or any other purpose, the money you get is usually considered a debt to you, and is deducted from your income. From this perspective, credit is much like a loan.

A person?s credit score refers to the person?s perceived worth, usually based on the person?s credit history. Credit history has become a very important concept for the society. Actually credit history refers to the chronicles of how someone has been handling their debts within a certain period of time. Whenever you pay for your credit card or loans and mortgages, it is indicated in your credit history, and financial institutions use the history to determine your worth. It is therefore important to pay your bills and loans on time in order to maintain a good credit score.

90 cats rescued from smuggling near Thai border

BANGKOK (AP) ? Thai police say they have rescued about 90 famished cats that they believed had been headed to Vietnam. They declined to say what fate they had rescued the felines from, but cats are considered a delicacy in their intended destination.

Police Col. Sakchai Sadmaroeng said Thursday his men stopped a pickup truck at a checkpoint Thursday and found six plastic cages full of cats in northeastern Nakhon Phanom province. The driver was arrested and faces charges including animal cruelty and illegal transportation of animals.

The Thai driver told police he received 2,000 baht ($63) to drive the cats to the Mekhong River, near the Thai-Laotian border.

Cat meat is offered in many restaurants in Vietnam. Dogs also have been smuggled there from Thailand for their meat.
